摘要: A spacer array is disclosed in which alternating cells are disposed at differing elevations. In a preferred octagonal spacer cell array, alternate fuel rods within the rows and columns of the fuel bundle matrix are surrounded by octagonal spacer cells at a first elevation. Likewise, and in the same preferred octagonal spacer array, the remaining alternate fuel rods within the rows and columns of the fuel bundle matrix are surrounded by octagonal spacer cells at a second elevation. The octagonal spacer cells of the spacer array at one level adjoin the octagonal spacer cells of the spacer array at an adjacent level. Specifically, each octagonal spacer cell has the top and/or the bottom of as many as four of its eight sides disposed for joinding with one side of as many as four octagonal cells in an adjacent cell layer. Each cell has approximately 0.6 of an inch height, or one-half the 1.2 inch height of the prior art. Physically each cell would have approximately half the height of the prior art cell type spacers. There results a spacer cell array which distributes half of the pressure drop at a first elevation, and the remaining half of the pressure at a second elevation for a projected spacer area of one-half that area of the prior art. Further, and because the two cell arrays making up the spacer are disposed at differing elevations--immediately above and below each other--the produced flow resistance at one level of the spacer cells does not have horizontally immediately adjacent cells. Thus, the cells in one layer do not co-act with adjacent flow frictions to the same extent as the co-action would occur if all flow frictions and restrictions were at the same elevation. There results an improved and lesser pressure drop in the disclosed spacer array.

摘要: In a boiling water nuclear reactor fuel bundle, the use of a shortened ferrule spacer in combination with overlying swirl vanes is set forth. In the preferred embodiment, the shortened ferrule spacer is placed under any swirl vanes and has an individual ferrule surrounding each fuel rod at the elevation of the spacer. Each ferrule is given both minimum side wall thickness in the range of 0.020 inches or less as well as reduced height in the order of 0.9 inch or less. The reduced height and thickness of the ferrule spacer is required to maintain pressure drop within acceptable limits and still tends to augment the required liquid film for steam generation over the fuel rod lengths downstream (that is immediately above) the spacer. At the same time, the swirl vane structure is placed immediately above the ferrule spacer overlying the so-called subchannel region of the ferrule spacer between the fuel rods.

摘要: A reactor core with each fuel rod surrounded by an individual cylindrical channel is disclosed. This individual channel on each fuel rod provides thermal hydraulic and heat transfer advantages to enable all fuel rods within the fuel bundle to uniformly approach their own thermal limits. The preferred fuel rod pitch is a triangular pitch between the individual fuel rods as they are discretely surrounded by their own channel. The new triangular geometry provides for more uniform (flat) power distributions within all fuel rods--and hence all groups of fuel rods. Bypass flow is introduced uniformly between the fuel rod channels, rather than heterogeneously in the channel gap and water rods as in present BWR fuel designs. Individual fuel rod channels can be orificed differently, as required, to match inlet flow to fuel rod power output to maintain uniformity between all fuel rods as they approach their respective thermal limits. Gaps between bundles can be eliminated, or at least minimized, yielding even higher power density. Spacers with flow diverting structure vanes are applied within the fuel rod channel to limit relative displacement between the channel wall and fuel rod cladding and to serve as turbulent flow promoters.

摘要: A swirl vane is disclosed for addition to a spring metal grid spacer utilized with a conventional nuclear boiling water nuclear reactor. The spring metal spacer includes a matrix of fuel rod containing cells. Each cell has at least one spring leg and at least two fuel rod encircling arms. The spring leg functions to bias a fuel rod contained within the cell at the spacer to one side of the cell. The two rod encircling arms define stops against which the fuel rods are biased. The cells themselves are welded into a unitary matrix and preferably surrounded by a metallic band. The improved swirl vane of this invention includes an "I" shaped spring steel strip. This strip includes top and bottom tabs for engaging the respective top and bottom grid structure of the spacer. The "I" shaped strip is then twisted to provide the swirl vane surface, this twisting being preferably slightly less than or greater than the total twisting required. Thereafter, the band is inserted to the grid and the twist used to wedge the band in place until welding has been utilized to secure the vane in place. In an alternate embodiment a row of swirl vanes is formed from a long strip so that the swirl vanes are joined at one end. Rows of swirl vanes are inserted into the spacer as units.

摘要: There is disclosed a grid in a nuclear fuel assembly for supporting fuel rods and thimbles, which includes a plurality of elongated straps intersecting perpendicularly with each other to define a plurality of grid cells. A plurality of engaging units are provided on the grid cells for supporting thimbles, respectively. Each engaging unit includes at least one engaging member provided on at least one of the opposite ends of the straps of the grid cell and defining an engaging portion. A plurality of cylindrical sleeves are arranged in the grid cells for supporting thimbles, respectively. Each sleeve has at least one engaging projection associated with the engaging portion of the engaging member. The engaging projection of the sleeve and the engaging portion of the engaging member are formed such that when the sleeve is turned circumferentially, the engaging projection is held in engagement with the engaging portion.

摘要: In a nuclear reactor, a core element bundle formed of a plurality of side-by-side arranged core elements is surrounded by restraining elements that exert a radially inwardly directed restraining force generating friction forces between the core elements in a restraining plane that is transverse to the core element axes. The adjoining core elements are in rolling contact with one another in the restraining plane by virtue of rollingtype bearing elements supported in the core elements.
