Abstract: Playlists having media items from more than one source are described. Media items in a first library are mapped to media items from an online media item store. Media items within the playlist that can be found in the first library will be played from the first library, while media items not within the first library will be played from the online media store. By identifying media items present in both libraries and playing them only from the first library, the described method can reduce the royalties needing to be paid by the online media store. Further methods are disclosed for setting limits on the number of media items that can be shared by a second library.

The present technology determines accounts with the user's social graph have the most similar taste in media items, and have the most similar engagement with media items, and selects these users from which to favor media item recommendations. Additionally, the recommendations can be ranked according to compatibility with the user's taste in media items.

Abstract: In accordance with some embodiments, a method includes displaying a representation of a first automatically-generated playlist, the representation of the first automatically-generated playlist including representations of a first set of media items selected for inclusion in the first automatically-generated playlist based on first playlist generation criteria for the first automatically-generated playlist. While displaying the first automatically-generated playlist, detecting user interaction with the representations of the first set of media items, and then detecting that a first update criterion for the first automatically-generated playlist has been met. In response, the method includes updating the first set of media items based on the first playlist generation criteria and the user interaction with the representations of the first set of media items—by adding or removing one or more removed media items from the first set of media items, and/or maintaining media items in the first set of media items.

Abstract: A graphical user interface made up of icons representing individual files and collectively forming the shape of a “v” is described along with methods of using and creating the graphical user interface. The v-shaped interface is useful to display detailed information about many of the items in a list and facilitates manipulation of list order and selection of the active file in the list. The interface further permits the use of a representative icon associated with the list as a whole. Manipulation of the representative icon can cause modification or replacement of the entire playlist represented by the icon.
