摘要: A method of detecting the presence of an unsafe line condition at a power metering device is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of determining if a disconnect switch is in the open position, and measuring a first voltage at a first load contact. The method measures a second voltage at a second load contact and determines if the first voltage is greater than a first voltage threshold or less than a second voltage threshold. The method further determines if the second voltage is greater than the first voltage threshold or less than the second voltage threshold. The method indicates that an unsafe condition exists if either the first voltage is greater than the first voltage threshold, or first voltage is less than the second voltage threshold or the second voltage is greater than the first voltage threshold or the second voltage is less than the second voltage threshold, when the disconnect switch is in the open position.

摘要: Techniques for power outage management and power support restoration for devices in a wireless network are disclosed herein. Such a wireless network may include a number of bi-directional nodes in bi-directional wireless communication with one or more central nodes. Each bi-directional node may have a wireless communication path to one of the central nodes that is either a direct path or an indirect path through one or more intermediate bi-directional nodes serving as relays. Each bi-directional node may be configured to detect when it has become stranded such that it can no longer communicate with its assigned central node via its assigned communication path, to determine a reason for its stranding, and to transmit a stranding notification and the reason therefore.

摘要: The invention contemplates an electrical power meter and method of operating the electrical power meter. The inventive power meter includes a power supply for converting alternating current (AC) voltage to a direct current (DC) voltage for powering the electronic components, and an optical diode in series with the power supply. The meter may also include an optical communications port in communication with the optical diode and/or a switch (e.g., a transistor) in communication with the optical diode. The switch may be in parallel with the optical diode, and allow DC current to bypass the optical diode when a request for communication is received by the meter. The DC current provided to the optical diode represents communication of data with an optical communications port. The switch may be controlled by a microprocessor device.

摘要: The invention contemplates an electrical power meter and method of operating the same, where the meter has electronic components (e.g., a power supply and a voltage sensing circuit) and receives alternating current (AC) voltage from an electrical power line. The inventive meter includes a power supply that converting the AC voltage to a direct current (DC) voltage for powering the electronic components. Also, the AC voltage provides an electrical reference potential for the electronic components. The inventive meter further includes a DC power source (e.g., a diode and/or a resistor in series connection) in a parallel circuit configuration with the AC voltage. The DC power source provides a DC bias voltage to the AC voltage. The AC voltage may create a relatively small voltage across the diode device.

摘要: An electronic meter that is capable of handling an analog cellular phone or radio modem under the meter cover provides significant improvements in the thermal management and power handling that is associated with a circuit switched wireless device. The electronic meter comprises a power supply capable of delivering the transmitter power plus the associated losses due to transmitter efficiency. It is desirable to deliver the high power over a wide range of AC input voltages (typically from about 90 to 530 VAC). The meter packaging allows the power supply and the analog cellular modem to operate in an enclosed metering package without exceeding the operating temperatures of the electronic components. The packaging adapts to increased steady state (idle) conditions as well as increased transmit conditions.

摘要: An automated meter reading system is provided. The system includes a host server interfaced to a plurality of nodes where each node communicates with a number of utility meters. The system selects a group of noninterfering nodes and uses an RF broadcast from the host server to initiate the reading of meters and the uploading of meter data provided by those meters to the nodes and, ultimately, to the host server. The system also has a number of gateways that communicate with a plurality of nodes, grouped to form sets of noninterfering gateways. In this embodiment, the system selects a set of noninterfering gateways and uses an RF broadcast from the host server to initiate the reading of meters and the uploading of meter data provided by those meters to the nodes and, ultimately, through the gateways to the host server. A method for using an outbound RF channel to automatically read meters is also provided.

摘要: An apparatus and method for detecting tampering with an electrical energy meter comprising a disconnect switch, interposed into feeder lines that deliver electrical energy from a voltage source to an electrical load, which switches between an open circuit in which electrical energy is not supplied to the electrical load and a closed circuit in which electrical energy is supplied to the electrical load, a load-side voltage sensor, which provides voltage signals indicative of load-side voltage, and a microprocessor that determines whether a tamper conditions exists by determining whether the disconnect switch is open or closed, determining whether a load-side voltage is present, and, if the disconnect switch is open and a load-side voltage is present, indicating that a tamper condition exists. The tamper detection apparatus preferably includes a communications module, connected to the microprocessor, for providing a two-way communications interface to a remote location. In this embodiment, if the microprocessor determines that a tamper condition exists, the microprocessor transmits to the remote location a message indicating that a tamper condition exists. The communications module may also open or close the disconnect switch in response to open and close commands from the remote location. This feature permits remote polling of the meter to determine if a tamper condition is present.

摘要: Methods and apparatus for establishing communications between electrical and electronic devices utilizing existing power signal distribution networks are disclosed. In such methods and apparatus the transmitting and receiving components of such devices are coupled between line and ground. Such coupling is achieved utilizing a coupler, a first frequency reactive device, such as a drain coil or inductor, connected in series with neutral and a second frequency reactive device, such as a capacitor connected between neutral ground. For use with existing electronic equipment, an adaptor for coupling the communications signal to a power signal distribution network is also disclosed. Since, line and neutral paths may sometimes be mis-wired, the apparatus and methods also disclose the use of a switch for enabling the coupling of a communication signal when a power signal is sensed on the line path.

摘要: Apparatus and methods are claimed for detecting tampering with a load management terminal, wherein the terminal has a load control relay coupled to a power line for selectably decoupling the load from the power line. One embodiment of the claimed apparatus for detecting tampering comprises a current sensor coupled to the load control relay for sensing whether load current is flowing through the load control relay contacts when the contacts are closed. A timer is provided for measuring elapsed time during which no current is sensed flowing through the closed contacts. An indicator provides an indication of tampering when the elapsed time measured by the timer exceeds a pre-determined time limit. Preferably, in this embodiment, the current sensor comprises a voltage detector coupled to the control coil of the relay for detecting whether an AC voltage has been induced in the control coil by the load current. In another embodiment, a voltage sensor is provided for sensing whether voltage is present across the contacts of the relay when the contacts are open. In yet another embodiment, a suitable resistance is connected to the power line in parallel with the load thermostat to ensure at least a nominal current flow through the load control relay at all times. Tampering is indicated when an interruption in the continuous current flow is detected.
