摘要: The present invention is a passively shieldable blood collection set. The blood collection set includes a needle cannula, a hub mounted to the needle cannula and a tip guard slidably movable along the needle cannula. The tip guard can be slid into a distal position where the tip of the needle cannula is safely shielded. A collapsible guard drive is mounted to the hub and includes a pair of collapsible leaves extending from the hub to the tip guard. The leaves have a length that enable the tip guard to move into shielding engagement around the tip of the needle cannula, while preventing complete removal of the tip guard from the needle cannula. The leaves are resiliently deformable and can be collapsed onto themselves and onto the hub. The leaves can be retained in their collapsed condition by a packaging cover and subsequently by the grip of a medical practitioner. A mere release of the grip on the collapsed leaves enables the leaves to resiliently return toward an undeflected condition and propels the tip guard distally into shielding engagement around the tip of the needle cannula.

摘要: A retractable needle syringe includes a barrel defining a receiver. There is a plunger having an inner rod extending distally from the proximal end. The plunger includes a hollow sleeve that is disposed over and extend beyond an inner rod. The plunger includes a hollow cutter extending from the inner rod and a stopper disposed over the end of the sleeve. The plunger has a displaceable collar to prevent movement of the inner rod with respect to the sleeve, that is by distal force to the plunger by engagement with the proximal end of the barrel allowing the cutting surface to cut through the stopper. There is a hub with a stem, a proximal flange and an engagement. A clip having a proximal foot with an opening therethrough and a distal grip is disposed on the stem of the hub. The proximal foot of the clip is disposed at the distal surface of the flange and the grip at the engagement on the stem. There is a spring disposed about the stem compressed between the receiver and the clip to provide a bias, so that when sufficient force is applied to the plunger causing the cutting surface to cut through the stopper, the cutting surface then engages, cuts through the flange to engage the clip and cause the clip to release the engagement on the stem. This allows the spring to urge the hub to a position within the syringe.

摘要: A vessel is disclosed that is useful for collecting a sample of a body fluid and, when subjected to centrifugation, separating the sample into a higher specific gravity phase and a lower specific gravity phase. The vessel of the invention includes an elongate tube that has an open end, a closed end and a sidewall. The sidewall has an outside surface and an inside surface and defines a receptacle with a central axis. The vessel has a closure disposed to fit the open end of the tube thereby sealing the receptacle. The vessel also includes an elongate separator releasably positioned at the open end of the tube that has a resilient top portion an elongate lower portion. The elongate lower portion has an axial passage therethrough. The top portion is sized to fit releaseably within the receptcle with an interference fit against the inside surface. When the vessel is subject to axial centrifugal force, the separator moves a distance axially from the open end toward the closed end.

摘要: A closure for sealing the open end of a specimen collection container from the environment is provided. The closure includes a generally spherical-shaped ball having a passageway extending therethrough, with the ball including an axle permitting rotative movement of the ball thereabout between an open position and a closed position. The closure further includes a socket mounted on the open end of the collection container, with the socket including a ball receiving internal surface having an axle-support for receiving the axle of the ball for accommodating rotative movement of the ball therein. The passageway of the ball is aligned with the open end of said collection container when the ball is in an open position and is out of alignment with the open end of the collection container when the ball is in a closed position. The axle-support of the socket and the axle of the ball are parallel and eccentric with respect to each other.
