A rotary unit with a built-in clutch which is short in its axial length. The rotary unit has an inner member having an outer periphery formed with a raceway groove and a pair of cylindrical surfaces on both sides of the raceway groove, and a cylindrical outer member having an inner periphery formed with a raceway groove and a pair of cylindrical surfaces on both sides of the groove. A retainer mounted between the inner and outer members has a plurality of circumferentially spaced pockets each housing a rolling member and sprag housing recesses provided alternately with the pockets. In each recess is received a sprag having both ends thereof resting on the opposing cylindrical surfaces and biased by a resilient member so that its inner and outer arcuate surfaces contact the cylindrical surfaces. By arranging the sprags and the rolling members alternately with each other in the circumferential direction, it is possible to reduce the entire axial length of the rotary unit.

The drag strip also has a hanger which extends at a right angle from at least one of opposite ends of the sliding main body into an engagement-member-receiving window of the retainer. On a side edge of the drag strip, where the drag strip is normally maintained in contact with an edge of the engagement-member-receiving window of the inner retainer, the drag strip has an engagement portion engageable with the edge the engagement-member-receiving window. The engagement portion is located in the same plane as the side edge of the hanger. The hanger is maintained in engagement with the retainer by the engagement portion.

When sprags interposed between the outer ring and inner ring are engaged with an inner peripheral surface of the outer ring and press the inner peripheral surface radially outwardly, the internal portion having the hardness of HRC 55 or more backs up the inner peripheral surface to prevent the inner peripheral surface from being deformed radially outwardly. An improved overrunning clutch roller energizing spring of the type that has a series of flat leaves forming V's with energy storing folds or pleats at the peak of each V. The front and rear leaves of the spring each have an integrally formed end loop with a diameter greater than the height beyond which the spring should not be compressed. The loop diameter is less than the space differential available between the spring pleats and the side rails. When the spring compresses back toward the roller pocket base, the loops hit on each side of the spring, preventing the spring from compressing further than its solid height. The end loops do not hit or rub on the spring pleats, and prevent the spring pleats from rubbing on the pocket side rails.
