A method for determining construction parameters of magnet structures designed to generate magnetic fields in predetermined volumes of space, comprising the steps of: a) defining a predetermined volume of space in which a static magnetic field is to be generated; b) defining the nominal strength and profile of the magnetic field in said predetermined volume of space; c) mathematically describing the nominal magnetic field on the surface of and/or in said predetermined volume of space by using a polynomial expansion of the magnetic field-describing function, which provides a series of coefficients; d) determining the size, geometry and relative position in space of the means for generating said nominal magnetic field, with respect to the volume of space in and on which the desired, i.e. nominal magnetic field, is defined. According to the invention, the predetermined volume of space is delimited by an ideal ellipsoidal closed surface and the magnetic field is expressed by coefficients of a polynomial ellipsoidal harmonic expansion. The method may be also used as a shimming method in volumes of space ideally delimited by ellipsoidal closed surfaces, to be implemented whether or not the predetermined volume of space defined by the magnet structure is also delimited by an ideal closed surface, with an ellipsoidal or other shape.

Method of magnetic resonance imaging comprising the steps of: exciting magnetic resonant (MR) active nuclei in a region of interest; creating magnetic field gradients in a phase-encode direction for spatially encoding the excited MR active nuclei; the number of phase-encode gradients producing a field of view corresponding to the region of interest; receiving radio frequency data from the region of interest using an array of at least two radio frequency receive coils, and producing from the radio frequency data an image by combining the images Si obtained from the radio frequency signals of the single coils Ci of the array by weighting the said images Si of each coil Ci with the sensitivity Bi of the corresponding coil Ci; an estimated sensitivity Bi (Fourier domain) of each coil Ci of the array being used, which is determined by applying a smoothing filter fi to the k-space data si received from each coil Ci. According to the invention the said fi smoothing filter being estimated from the spatial frequencies content of the k-space sensitivity map of each coil, and the filter fi being a k-space filter with a triangular or pyramidal shape, depending on the fact that a single dimensional profile or a two dimensional image is reconstructed, the triangular filter having a width and the pyramidal filter having a base which is double than the maximum spatial frequency of the relative coil field.

A method for producing planar gradient coils for MRI systems includes defining a planar surface along which one continuous current wire extends along a path for generating a gradient field along a spatial direction; defining the path of the continuous current wire as a spiral path of a single continuous wire filament; describing the spiral path of the continuous current wire by a parametric curve according to a modified version of the Pascal Limançons curve combined with the Archimede's spiral; applying the Biot-Savard law to evaluate the magnetic field generated by the continuous current wire extending along the spiral path; optimizing the parameters of the parametric curve for shaping the spiral path of the continuous current wire to generate a linear magnetic gradient field along the spatial direction and which gradient magnetic field is linear inside a predetermined volume of space permeated by the linear magnetic gradient field.
