Abstract: A method of reducing gases rich in carbon dioxide by means of a reducing agent containing readily sintering ash constituents, e.g. coke, comprises forming a continuously sinking vertical p column of separate pieces of coke, fresh coke and the gas being separately delivered to the top and separately withdrawn from the bottom of the column which is heated by passage of electric current therethrough to a temperature not exceeding the sintering temperature of the ash constituents. Lime or sulphur binding agents may be previously incorporated in the coke, or they may be separately fed into the column.
