A jet of gas injected from a lance is fluidically deviated with a gas flowing in either the same or opposite direction as the jet of gas. The gas used to fluidically deviate the jet is the same as or different from the gas in the jet.

A method of refining molten metal in a vessel by the reaction of oxygen with impurities in the molten metal comprises the steps of: a) ejecting at least one primary jet of oxygen from a lance positioned above the molten metal into the molten metal to react with impurities therein and to form a layer of molten slag; b) continuing to eject the primary jet of oxygen from the lance and thereby causing the primary bet of oxygen to pass through the slag layer into the molten metal; c) ejecting a plurality of secondary jets of oxygen from the lance, the secondary jet of oxygen travelling for a distance separately from the primary jet of oxygen; and d) entraining the secondary jets of oxygen into the primary jet of oxygen upstream of the entry of the primary jet of oxygen into the molten metal. A lance head for use in the method has at least one primary oxygen port and a plurality of secondary oxygen ports, the axis of the second oxygen port diverging in the direction of flow from the primary oxygen port at an angle of up to 45°. The method and lance head are particularly of use in the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) process. If desired, a stirring gas such as argon may be mixed with the primary oxygen.

An apparatus for injecting gas into a vessel includes a gas flow duct which receives hot gas through a gas inlet structure at a rear end of the duct. The forward end of the duct has an annular duct with an internal cooling water passage. Cooling water supply and return passages are formed within the wall of the duct such that water flows to and from a tip through the supply and return passages. The tip includes a hollow shell and a partitioning structure that has a ring and a plurality of circumferential flanges that project outwardly from the ring to the shell to form a series of water flow galleries, each extending circumferentially around the tip and interconnected for flow of cooling water sequentially through the galleries from the water supply passages to the water return passage. The circumferential flanges also serve as buttress supports for the shell.

Apparatus for injecting gas into a vessel including a gas flow duct 31 which receives hot gas through a gas inlet structure 32 at a rear end of the duct. An elongate central structure 33 extends throughout the length of duct 31 and carries a series of vanes 34 for imparting swirl to the gas flow exiting the forward end of the duct. The forward end of the duct 31 has an internally water cooled tip 36 and water flows to and from tip 36 through annular passages 43, 44 in the wall of duct 31. Vanes 34 are mounted on central structure 33 so as to extend to forward ends disposed within the duct tip 36 and are dimensioned such that during operation of the apparatus their forward ends are engaged and supported by the internally water cooled duct tip 36.

A method of controlling total jet pressure from the head of a metallurgical lance for introducing gas into a volume of metal in a vessel. The lance head has at least one ejector, which has a nozzle located in a bore of the lance head and has an annular gas passage between at least one nozzle and the wall of the bore. The method proceeds by adjusting the annular gas velocity from a first Mach number to a second mach number to effect change of the total jet pressure.

A method of improving the post-combustion heat recovery in a basic oxygen furnace by controllably forming a foamy slag. The foamy slag is generated by increasing the lance height and reducing the rate of lance height reduction during the oxygen blowing cycle. The foamy slag is controlled to prevent slopping by calculating the approximate starting point of the peak decarburization period for the charge and then adjusting the oxygen flow rate to be at a minimum at the commencement of the peak decarburization period.

The invention relates to various energy saving measures for use in the smelting, refining and melting of metals, and in particular in the manufacture of steels, alloy steels and ferrous alloys. In such processes fuel consumption is reduced and efficiency improved by using in the oxy-fuel or air-fuel burner a fuel (referred to as an "X-type" fuel) which has an exothermic heat of decomposition or which has only a zero or a very small endothermic heat of decomposition. The invention also relates to an oxy-fuel or air-fuel burner for use in a metallurgical process using an X-type fuel, which burner uses as coolant for the burner walls and tip the fuel used in the burner.

A method for stably refining high carbon steel by top and bottom blown converter refining in which the entire quantity or part of refining pure oxygen is blown onto molten iron through a top blowing lance nozzle while blowing an inert gas into the converter through a nozzle at the bottom thereof, and wherein the bottom blown inert gas is fed at a rate less than 0.09 Nm.sup.3 /min.multidot.ton during the blowing and/or at a rate less than 0.03 Nm.sup.3 /min.multidot.ton in a controlling stage immediately after turndown.

摘要:
A process for refining a metal bath in a converter by oxygen blowing, particularly a molten metal liquid bath containing cold, solid substances, notably of scrap. Oxygen is distributed over the surface of the bath, so that there will be an after-combustion of CO released in the course of decarbonization. The thickness and consistency of a slag layer formed over the bath is actively regulated by injecting a rising inert gas through the bottom of the bath. The flow of rising gas may be regulated depending upon the oxygen content in the fumes of the converter, or upon the intensity of emission through the top of an oxygen blowing lance.
