There is disclosed an Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 based ceramic which includes 5% to 50% by weight of a hard dispersed phase of at least one compound selected from metal carbide, metal nitride, metal carbonitride, metal oxy-carbide, metal oxy-nitride and metal carbo-oxy-nitride. The compound is represented by M(CNO), wherein M is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Ti, Zr and Hf. The ceramic optionally contains 1% to 25% by weight of ZrO.sub.2, and balance Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 matrix, which contains an additive dissolved in the Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 grains so as to form solid solution therewith. The additive is contained in an amount of 0.01% to 12% by weight with respect to the Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 matrix and is at least one oxide of an element selected from the group consisting of Y, Mg, Cr, Ni, Co, and rare earth elements. The Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 grains have an average grain size no larger than 1.0 .mu. m while the hard phase constituent has an average grain size no larger than 0.6 .mu. m.

An electrophotographic photosensitive member is constituted by an electroconductive support, and an intermediate layer and a photosensitive layer disposed in this order on the support. The intermediate layer comprises a reaction product of a mixture including a polyol compound [A] and a polyisocyanate compound[B] satisfying at least one of the following conditions (i) and (ii): (i) the polyol compound [A] is a high-molecular weight polyol compound, and (ii) the polyisocyanate compound is a polyoxyalkylene segmentcontaining polyisocyanate compound. The photosensitive member shows stable electrophotographic performances over wide environmental conditions from low temperature - low humidity to high temperature - high humidity due to the intermediate layer.

The plungers are movable into and out of the respective cylinders by a stroke determined by the angle of inclination of the swash plate. A length of filter material is held between a conveyor system and a mask ring to be fed into a predetermined direction. The conveyor has laterally extending air permeable sections and air non-permeable sections; the mask ring has laterally extending slits and mask sections between the slits. The air permeable sections of the conveyor and slits in the mask ring are set in registry with each other. The conveyor and mask ring are synchronously driven. Within the mask ring is provided an additive supplier while the conveyor is provided with a negative pressure source such that the additive is adsorbed through the slits onto the filter material under the negative pressure behind the filter material through the air permeable sections of the conveyor.
