    摘要: The present invention provides an anisotropic light scattering element that is further improved in controlling of the viewing angle and also reduced in the thickness. The anisotropic light scattering element has an anisotropy in the scattering intensity, and includes an anisotropic light scattering layer having an anisotropy in the light scattering intensity depending on the polarization direction of incident linearly polarized light, and a birefringent layer having a phase difference of less than 1/10 wavelength with respect to incident light in a normal direction and a phase difference with respect to incident light in a direction inclined from the normal that is different from the phase difference with respect to incident light in a normal direction. The birefringent layer develops a phase difference with respect to incident light in a direction inclined from the normal.

    摘要: A practical optical film which has excellent anisotropy in the scattering of linearly polarized light, can be easily produced and has excellent thermal stability, and an optical element using the optical film are disclosed. The optical film comprises an optically isotropic resin film and birefringent minute regions dispersedly contained therein comprising a thermoplastic resin having a glass transition temperature of 50° C. or higher and showing a nematic liquid crystal phase in a range of temperatures lower than the glass transition temperature of the resin constituting the resin film, wherein the difference in refractive index between the resin film and the minute regions in a direction perpendicular to the axis direction in which a linearly polarized light has a maximum transmittance, &Dgr;n1, is 0.03 or larger and that in the maximum-transmittance axis direction, &Dgr;n2, is 50% or smaller of the &Dgr;n1. The optical element comprises a multilayer structure which comprises at least one of a polarizing film and a retardation and one or more layers of the optical film.

    摘要: A polarizer of the invention comprises: a film that has a structure having at least two types of minute domains dispersed in a matrix formed of an optically-transparent water-soluble resin, wherein at least one of the minute domains is formed of a liquid-crystalline birefringent material, and at least one of the other type or types of the minute domains is formed of a polyvinyl alcohol resin material containing a dichroic light-absorbing material that does not lose its dichroism within the liquid crystal temperature range of the liquid-crystalline birefringent material. The polarizer has good heat resistance and a high polarization degree and a high transmittance such that unevenness in transmittance can be suppressed when black viewing is displayed.
