Abstract:
The invention relates to an arrangement of sheet-holding systems at storage drums in turning devices of sheet-fed printing machines. It is an object of the invention to provide an arrangement of sheet-holding systems at storage drums, which ensures a stiff construction of the storage drum and a simple adjustment of the sheet-holding systems relative to one another. Pursuant to the invention, this objective is accomplished owing to the fact that sheet-holding systems (8, 9) are provided in the front and rear regions for taking hold of the sheet (7) and can be adjusted relative to one another in the circumferential direction and the sheet holding systems (8) are assigned to the basic body (11) of the storage drum (5) for the front region and the sheet-holding systems (9) are assigned to a central axis (4), which can be fixed and rotated relative to the basic body (11) of the storage drum (5) for the rear region and the central axis (14 is connected with the sheet-holding system (9) by the side disk (17) of the basic body (11) of the storage drum (5).
Abstract:
A high speed paper folding machine for cutting a continuously fed web of paper into sections and folding said sections is disclosed. The machine includes a rotating hollow drum on which the web is deposited and on which the cutting and folding operations are performed without transferring the web or the cut or folded sections off of the drum. The drum includes a knife for cutting the web. The knife preferably is situated within the drum interior and adapted to extend through elongated apertures defined on the drum outer surface. Grippers on the drum hold the web on the drum through the operation. At least one folding station is operably associated with the drum. At least one pack-off station can be provided for stacking the folded product in separate stacks.
Abstract:
A folder for a rotary printing press, having at least one copy-guiding cylinder and, on the one copy-guiding cylinder, gripping devices for gripping one end of a copy, includes a cutting cylinder cooperating with the one copy-guiding cylinder, and copy-guiding devices provided on the cutting cylinder, the gripping devices of the one copy-guiding cylinder and the copy-guiding devices of the cutting cylinder being retractably and extensibly movable substantially parallel to normals to axes of rotation of the one copy-guiding cylinder and the cutting cylinder; and a method of operating the folder.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an apparatus for producing at least two 4-page signatures (340) and an apparatus for producing at least one 16-page signature (460). The signatures are produced by folding and cutting sheets cut from a continuous web in a folding machine (500 or 600). The apparatus of the present invention provides a selectable blade device which folds or folds and cuts sheets being processed in the device. When placed in the fold and cut position, the apparatus is capable of producing at least two 4-page signatures (340) or at least one 16-page signature (460) without the need for a final off-line trimming step.
Abstract:
A collecting cylinder and a folding flap cylinder cooperate to form a cross-folding device for signatures in a rotary printing press. The leading edge of each signature is initially retained on the collecting cylinder and is held there after insertion of the cylinder into the folding flap. The trailing edge of the signature is transferred to grippers on the folding flap cylinder at a point where the two cylinders are in contact. Operation of the cross-folding device results in reduced folded product damage.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for reducing the formation of "dog-ears" or folded corners in material handled by sheet material handling machines such as folders for printing presses in which material such as paper is secured to a rotating cylinder near a leading edge, which includes providing a projection on the cylinder which deflects air flow away from the material leading edge so as to reduce the tendency for the material to lift from the cylinder. In order to pass through the cylinder nip, the projection may be constructed of compressible resilient material such as foam rubber or may be deflectable upon contact with an opposing cylinder.
Abstract:
A gripper mechanism for printing press folding machines or other sheet handling equipment comprises a rigid holder mounted on a pivot shaft and a resilient gripper finger, fixed to the holder, which pivots into engagement with an angled clamping surface. The geometry of the gripper finger relative to the holder is such that the rigid holder and resilient finger act as a linkage which, upon application of counterforce by the clamping surface, imparts a radial component of force to the gripper tip equal and opposite to the radial component of counterforce, thereby producing non-sliding engagement of a sheet of paper positioned between the clamping surface and said tip.
