摘要: Low friction pivot 10 has base 12 and pivot pin 16. Bands 22, 24, and 26 are secured to the base 12 on one end and half-wrapped around the cylindrical pivot pin 16 on the other end. The slot 18 in pin 16 is for receiving and clamping that end of the bands. The torque caused by the bent bands is equal so that in any rotative position there is no net torque applied to pin 16.

摘要: A flexure-pivot for providing resilient restraint that opposes relative angular displacement between two members involves two flat springs, that are held at one end between pairs of pins carried by one member and at the other end between pairs of pins carried by the other member, the flat springs each having two parallel rib portions that are linked at one end and are interlaced with one another. In one form of flexure-pivot the unlinked end of both the rib portions of each spring is secured between a pair of pins carried by one member and the linked end of both the rib portions of each spring is secured between a pair of pins carried by the other member. In another form of flexure-pivot the pairs of pins carried by one member are axially aligned with the pairs of pins carried by the other member, when there is no relative displacement between the members, and the unlinked end of one of the rib portions is secured to one of the pairs of pins carried by one member and the unlinked end of the other one of the rib portions is secured to the axially aligned pair of pins carried by the other member, so that there is a resilient interconnection between the axially aligned pairs of pins. In both forms of flexure-pivot, further pins are mounted with one or other of the members to limit relative angular displacement between the two members by engagement with pairs of pins mounted on an opposite member. Manufacture of both forms of flexure-pivot is initially the same and is carried out by inserting the ends of four pairs of pins in holes in one member, securing each end of the two flat springs between opposite pairs of pins, inserting the other ends of the four pairs of pins in holes in the other member, and brazing the assembly formed to secure the springs to the pins and the pins to the members. One form of flexure-pivot is subsequently formed by cutting two adjacent pairs of pins close to one member and the other two adjacent pairs of pins close to the other member. The other form of flexure-pivot however is formed by cutting through two adjacent pairs of pins at points between the rib portions and cutting through the other two adjacent pairs of pins at one point close to one member and at another point close to the other member.

摘要: An apparatus is disclosed for a rolling contact joint that is particularly useful as a prosthetic joint such as a knee joint, as well as other applications requiring relatively movable sections having mechanical joints. The joint may take a variety of forms depending upon the particular situation, but in essence, includes at least two bodies that have surface portions in contact, with the bodies being movable relative to one another and constrained in this movement by the nature of the surfaces in contact and flexible straps positioned about and also in contact with the bodies. Where a basic configuration including a pair of cylinders is utilized, the flexible straps may be wrapped completely or partially around each of the cylinders to provide a joint having substantially no restraint of motion with very low friction due to the rolling contact between the contacting surfaces of the cylinders. In addition, such bodies may each have a pair of cylindrical surfaces of different diameter with respect to one another with the bodies in contact at one cylindrical surface and the flexible straps wrapped about the other of the cylindrical surfaces. If the cylindrical surfaces are concentric with respect to one another and have diameters of proper ratio, there will be no substantially resistance to the motion, and because of the rolling contact, friction will be very low. If the cylindrical surfaces are not concentric, however, then the flexible straps will be strained during rotation and a spring action will be provided in the device. Since the shape of the bodies and the positioning of the flexible straps determines the particular type of motion, various possible combinations have been described. In addition, a particular embodiment of a rolling contact joint is described for use as a prosthetic knee joint.

摘要: A flexible longitudinally continuous tape construction is disclosed for use in joining mating edges of juxtaposed members, the tape having an X-like configuration transversely of its length to provide legs adapted to receive and be secured to the edges of the members to be joined. The tape is capable of serving as a pliable hinge to permit articulation of the joined members, or it may also serve simply as a binding for joining members intended to be fixed relative to each other. The tape construction combines longitudinally continuous marginal web portions or carriers, forming the extremities of the legs of the X, with longitudinally spaced strand or equivalent connector means running crosswise of and interconnecting pairs of marginal web portions. The connector means intersect and interlock forming the axis of the X-like configuration.
