A method and communication system is provided to identify a calling/called party when the call is being set up but before the call is answered. In the method, a first terminal and a second terminal are respectively provided with opposing terminal's image data before the call is answered. The image data of the first and second terminals can be registered in a media server disposed between the first and second terminals, and the image data can be transmitted between the first terminal and the media server and between the second terminal and the media server in accordance with an SIP protocol.

There is described a method of a wireless communication device for managing status components for global call control. A selectable region is displayed at a display. Next, an active call status component associated with a current call is displayed at the display in response to the first user input. A second user input is detected at the input component corresponding to selection of the current call status component. Thereafter, active call information associated with an active call is displayed at the display or an active call is terminated in response to detecting the second user input.

In one aspect of the invention, a computer-implemented method is disclosed for use in conjunction with a portable electronic device with a touch screen display. A list of items comprising missed telephone calls is displayed. Upon detecting user selection of an item in the list, contact information is displayed for a respective caller corresponding to the user selected item. The displayed contact information includes a plurality of contact objects that include a first contact object, comprising a telephone number object having a first telephone number associated with the missed telephone call, and a second contact object. Upon detecting user selection of the second contact object, a communication with the respective caller is initiated via a modality corresponding to the second contact object.

A universal interface device comprises a housing having a curvilinear or other shape, and processing circuitry disposed within the housing. The housing incorporates a sensor array substantially surrounding the processing circuitry and configured to receive touch input from points distributed over an outer surface of the housing. The sensor array generates sensor signals responsive to the touch input and the sensor signals are converted by the processing circuitry into commands associated with a communication function supported by the communication device. In an illustrative embodiment, the housing has a spheroidal shape, and the sensor array is configured to receive touch input from points distributed over substantially the entire outer surface of the housing. The points distributed over the outer surface of the housing from which the sensor array receives touch input are undefined from a point of view of a user providing at least a portion of the touch input.

A system allows a user to send alias information or receive alias information during a communication between two communication devices. Alias information is identity information for a user that identifies the user on a social media site or network (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.). The alias information can be stored in a contacts program or other data store. During a web-based telephone call between two IP-enabled phones, the alias information may be retrieved. The alias information can then be sent to the other IP-enabled phone or to another device associated with the calling party. In response to receiving the alias information, the calling party can automatically retrieve information associated with the called party and the alias from one or more social media sites.
