A firearm monitoring system according to the present invention senses the position of a user hand or trigger finger on a weapon and generates a warning, notification, status or control signal when the user finger position is proximate the trigger. One embodiment generates and conditions an excitation stimulus (e.g., interrupted by the presence of a trigger actuator), drives a sensor with that stimulus, detects the user finger position through a change in the sensor output, and generates an appropriate signal for a downstream warning or other device (e.g., alarm, radio unit, laser sighting system, etc.). In this embodiment, the sensor may detect the presence of an object or finger penetrating a trigger guard plane. Another embodiment utilizes a set of sensors to detect the placement of a user trigger finger relative to the trigger. In addition, various types of output alarms may be utilized (e.g., visual and audio alarms, etc.).

A tactile stimulus, preferably either an indentation or protrusion, is positioned on the firearm or other device where the user's finger should rest, off the trigger, until the firearm or other device is “on target” and pulling the trigger is appropriate. In preferred form, the tactile cue is placed on one or both sides of a trigger guard or if no trigger guard is present, on the frame or body of the firearm or other device.

A dual-purpose safety and retaining pin which performs the functions of sng the trigger assembly for a small arm and of securing the trigger assembly to the weapon is provided. The pin comprises a handle attached to a retainer and pin assembly which can be rotated to select safe or arm positions. The retainer and pin assembly is oriented in a specific rotational position with respect to the handle so that safing by rotating the pin can be accomplished. The pin has a cam configuration whereby rotation of the pin causes the cam to move a trigger connector link into contact with a hammer sear. This action enables the weapon. When the pin is rotated to the safe position or when the pin is removed from the trigger housing, the weapon is disabled. The pin is held in position by a plunger-ball locking arrangement. The single spring used to extend the plunger also acts as a detent engaging spring for securing the rotational position of the pin.

This device selectively locks the trigger of a firearm by the action of a hollow pin that, pushed by a spring, fits inside a cavity made at the bottom of the trigger. This hollow pin is welded to a flat steel bar that fits along a groove inside the horizontal part of the trigger guard. This trigger guard is made of a non-magnetizable material. The flat steel bar pivots by the use of a horizontal pin that can be locked at the front of the trigger guard, depending of the needs of the designers of the different guns. This flat steel bar has an up and down motion to lock and unlock the trigger.To release the trigger, the user of the gun wears a flat magnet with a magnetization pattern parallel to its thickness. This magnet should be attached to the exterior surface of the second phalanx of the middle finger of the shooting hand either mounted to a ring or sewn to a glove. In this way the magnet will be located under the trigger guard when the gun is held, and the pulling of the magnet will move the bar and the locking pin (hollow pin) down, unlocking the firearm.If the gun is dropped or taken away from the owner, it won't shoot. Neither will shoot if someone takes the gun unaware of the need of the magnet.

A firearm is provided customarily equipped with a shiftable trigger body portion mounted from the frame of the firearm for movement between a firing position and a release position and incorporating an outwardly projecting arcuate tang portion engageable by a user's trigger finger and enclosed within a trigger guard. The instant invention resides in the removable mounting of the finger engageable tang portion from the body portion of the trigger and, further, the construction of the finger engageable portion as a continuous peripheral ring shaped member which may be conveniently retained on a user's trigger finger during periods of non-use of the associated handgun. In a first disclosed form of the invention the ring-type trigger finger engageable portion is removably secured to the body portion of the trigger through the utilization of threaded shank-type fasteners and in a second disclosed form of the invention the ring-shaped finger engageable portion merely includes an outwardly projecting shank telescopingly receivable within an outwardly opening recess formed in the body portion of the trigger. The removability of the finger engageable portion substantially eliminates accidental firing of the handgun.
