A wireless charging device has a plurality of planar power transmitting coils arranged in two or more layers between a charging surface and a ferrite layer, and a driver circuit configured to provide a charging current to one or more of the plurality of planar power transmitting coils when a chargeable device is placed on or near the wireless charging device. Each planar power transmitting coil may be formed as a spiral winding surrounding a power transfer area. Inductance of each of the plurality of planar power transmitting coils measured at the charging surface varies from a nominal inductance value by less than ten percent.

The amplifier stage has a choke that receives a current from an input of the amplifier stage, a resonant network coupled to an output of the choke and that provides an output current to a load, and a first switch configured to short the output of the choke to circuit ground when turned on. The power switching stage may be configured to couple a power supply to the input of the amplifier stage and may have a second switch operable to couple the input of the amplifier stage to circuit ground when turned on. The controller may be configured to control operation of the first switch and the second switch in accordance with a timing sequence that defines a cycle of the output current.

The charging device also has a driver circuit configured to power the resonant circuit, a pulse width modulator and a controller configured to provide a control signal to the pulse width modulator the control signal configuring the pulse width to provide a modulated drive signal to the driver circuit. The pulse width modulator is configured to provide the modulated drive signal to the resonant circuit. The resonant circuit is configured to operate as a low-pass filter that blocks frequency components of the modulated drive signal that correspond to the reference signal. The driver circuit is configured to use the modulated drive signal to produce a charging current in the resonant circuit. The charging current causes power to be wirelessly transferred to a receiving device through the transmitting coil.

Each planar power transmitting coil may be formed as a spiral winding surrounding a power transfer area. In one example, each planar power transmitting coil is formed by spiral winding a multi-strand wire, each strand in the multistrand wire being electrically insulated from each other strand in the multi-strand wire. The coil substrate may have a plurality of cutouts formed therein. The plurality of cutouts may be configured to secure the planar power transmitting coils in a preconfigured three-dimensional arrangement. The driver circuit may be configured to provide a charging current to one or more of the planar power transmitting coils when a chargeable device is placed on or near the wireless charging device.

The pulse may have a duration that is less than half the period of a nominal resonant frequency of the charging circuit.
