摘要: The present invention is a method and apparatus to make an estimate of the phase of a signal relative to the local oscillator in an optical coherent detection subsystem that employs a digital signal processor having a parallel architecture. The phase estimation method comprises operations that do not use feedback of recent results. The method includes a cycle count function so that the phase estimate leads to few cycle slips. The phase estimate of the present invention is approximately the same as the optimal phase estimate.

摘要: In an optical data transmission system, one channel is removed from a group of wavelength division multiplexed optical channels and another channel carrying different information at the same wavelength is inserted in its place. The process occurs by adding an optical signal whose electric field is the difference between the electric field of the new and old channels. The difference calculation takes into account the phase of the incoming WDM channel and phase of the laser source of the difference signal. The method has applications in optical transmission networks as add-drop nodes and optical regenerators, for generation of high bandwidth optical signals, and for secret optical communications.

摘要: An insecticide composition is provided for killing insects comprising a metal sequestering agent and an insecticide. The composition is particularly useful for killing scale insects, particularly Cycad Asian Scale insects that are hosted by plants of the cycad phyta division. Since the scale insect's shell includes calcium, the metal sequestering agent, when combined with an insecticide and/or fungicide, substantially increases the likelihood that the insecticide and/or fungicide will come into contact with the insect and kill the insect.

摘要: A pack (13) for elongate smoking articles encased in an inner wrapping includes a paperboard outer container having a generally rectangular base (14), four hingedly connected side walls (15-20) which upstand from the base, and a top panel member (22) which at least partially closes off the top of the pack. The side walls (15-20) are substantially the same height as the smoking articles and are secured with respect to the base. Access to the smoking articles is made beside the top panel member (22).
