A pressure roller in a winding machine is axially shifted in accordance with the progress of winding so that the winding turns are tightly engaged with each other. At the end of a winding layer, the pressure roller is positioned adjacent a flange of the winding drum at a spacing distance equal to 1.5 times the diameter of the round material, so that the next winding layer is wound in the channels between winding turns of the first layer. The pressure roller and the winding drum are axially shiftable independently of each other, thereby providing centering of the drum with respect to the in-feed material and orderly reversal of winding action after each winding layer has been completed. The method and the apparatus are particularly suitable for thick round material which is hard to flex, such as solid or stranded wire or cable.

An apparatus for winding a textile yarn into a cross-wound package is disclosed, in which the yarn is wound about the package at a substantially constant rate while the yarn is guided onto the package by a traversing guide. The apparatus includes a yarn guide means which is reciprocated along a linear stroke path, and means are provided for recovering the kinetic energy of the yarn guide means during its reversal of movement at each end of the stroke path. Several specific embodiments of the yarn traversing guide are disclosed, and in one embodiment the traversing guide includes gripper means mounted on a slide which is positioned between parallel runs of a drive belt, and control means for moving the gripper means to alternately engage the two runs of the belt and thus reciprocate the slide.

The prior art apparatus to wind vertically running yarn was a vertical spindle with a pulley mounted on a driven shaft, a stationary yarn wheel guide, an upper vertically movable yarn guide wheel, a lower vertically movable yarn guide wheel, a double track cam vertically mounted with a driven pulley and shaft, an upper cam follower and shoe, a lower cam follower and shoe, cam housing having a vertical slot, a motor having both a spindle drive pulley and a cam drive pulley mounted on a drive shaft, a belt to drive the spindle from the motor and a belt to drive the cam from the motor. The motor would drive the vertical spindle and the cam by the connection of the driven pulleys to the motor drive pulleys with belts. The vertically movable yarn guide wheels were connected to their respective cam followers and the cam followers were both driven by this one double track cam to oscillate vertically in the cam housing slot. In this manner, the upper vertically movable yarn guide wheel oscillates in the upper half of the housing slot and the lower vertically movable guide wheel oscillates nearly the full length of the housing slot and for the full traverse of the winding yarn. The movable guide wheels, in concert, maintain a constant length of yarn between the stationary yarn wheel and the spindle. The stationary yarn wheel is centered with respect to the length of yarn traverse wound onto the vertical spindle. The improvement comprises a two-speed transmission used to drive the cam at two winds, and a high speed double track cam with the tracks cut so that the cam followers will describe a path at reversal along a 60.degree. angular displacement of a curve of cycloidal development. Thus, the spindle and the cam can start at a wind of from about 89 to about 152.52 and after about 0.1 to about 3 minutes, then change to achieve a wind of from about 11 to about 17. Yarn wound up in this manner can be unwound of speeds of up to 3,000 feet per minute or higher, for processing at speeds up to 8,000 feet per minute.

In a yarn winding mechanism wherein a length of yarn is wound onto a rotating bobbin, a yarn guide comprising a body supported for movement back and forth along a reciprocal path. A cam follower is affixed to a shaft which is rotatably supported by a metal sleeve positioned in an opening in the body, and the cam follower is adapted to move in a cam comprising a cylinder having a groove which is configured to permit the body to move along the reciprocal path. A yarn guide member is attached to the body for constraining the yarn to properly guide the yarn onto the bobbin. The body, cam follower, and shaft are made of a molded plastic of sufficiently high impact strength to withstand the forces applied to the guide to prevent deformation and breaking thereof and of a sufficiently low coefficient of friction to permit the body to move along the reciprocal path at the required operating speeds. The cam follower and shaft have a reinforcing member embedded therein which provides sufficient flexural rigidity to substantially prevent bending deforming, and breaking of the cam follower and shaft.
