摘要: A fiber optic coupler is formed by providing a glass tube having a longitudinal aperture extending therethrough. Glass optical fibers, each having a core, cladding and coating are disposed within the longitudinal aperture, the fibers extending beyond each end thereof. The coating is removed from that portion of the fibers in the midregion of the tube. The midregion of the tube is heated, collapsed about the fibers, and drawn to reduce the diameter thereof over a predetermined length. The fibers that are used in the process of making the coupler are initially provided with a coating that is too thin to provide good handleability and strength. However, the thin initial coating enables the use of a tube having a small aperture and thereby enhances the tube collapse step. After the coupler is formed, the fibers extending therefrom are overcoated. The process can be used to make other kinds of optical devices including integrated optical components.

摘要: A method of making an economical fiber coupler comprises providing a glass tube having first and second end portions and a midregion, and a longitudinal aperture extending therethrough. Two suitably prepared glass optical fibers, each having a core and cladding, are disposed within the longitudinal aperture, the fibers extending beyond each end thereof. The fibers are held taut to effect a tension therein, and they are glued to each end portion. The midregion of the member is heated, collapsed about the fibers, and drawn to reduce the diameter thereof.

摘要: A glass optical waveguide preform is formed by depositing first and second coatings of glass soot on a mandrel. The characteristics of the first coating are such that it can ultimately form the core of an optical fiber. The core-clad diameter ratio of the preform is greater than that necessary to provide the desired core-clad diameter ratio of the resultant fiber. The mandrel is removed and the porous preform is consolidated. The preform aperture is etched, rinsed and dried. One end of the preform is heated and pinched to close the aperture. The aperture is evacuated, and the remaining end of the preform is heated, the corresponding end of the aperture being caused to close. An intermediate fiber is drawn from the resultant consolidated preform, the entire aperture being closed during drawing due to the low pressure within the aperture. The intermediate fiber is severed into sections, each of which functions as a mandrel for the deposition of a further coating of cladding soot. The resultant composite article is consolidated and drawn into an optical fiber.

摘要: A low loss fiber optic coupler is fabricated by forming a coupler preform having a plurality of spaced glass cores extending longitudinally through a matrix of glass having a refractive index lower than that of the cores. The coupler preform is formed by inserting a plurality of coated optical fiber preform rods into an aperture extending axially through an elongated boule of relatively etchable matrix glass. The cladding portion of the rods, which is relatively etch-resistant, is coated with a layer of etchable glass. The coupler preform is heated and stretched to form a glass rod which is then severed into a plurality of units. Heat is applied to the central region of each unit, and the central region is elongated and tapered inwardly. When an end of the unit is immersed in acid, the matrix glass dissolves, thereby leaving the unit cores and surrounding etch-resistant cladding glass protruding from the newly formed endface of the unit.

摘要: Method of producing precision shaped apertures in glass is shown. A hollow glass member defining a longitudinal aperture is provided. A carbon graphite member is shaped externally to a desired shape, disposed within the longitudinal aperture in the glass member, which member is thereafter collapsed about the graphite member taking its shape and size. The graphite member is removed leaving the glass member with a precision aperture therein.
