An image forming apparatus and method for forming an image includes a recording material which changes its adhesiveness in response to the polarity of the voltage applied thereto. Such a recording material can include negatively or positively changeable or inorganic particles, gas-generating solvents, a substance having a gel or sol state, and a dissociative electrolyte. The recording material is positioned between a pair of electrodes. At least one of the electrodes includes an electroconductive member and a pattern comprising an insulating material disposed on the electroconductive member. A voltage is then applied between the pair of electrodes to attach the recording material to one of the electrodes. Also provided is a pressure applicator for transferring to a transfer-receiving medium the recording material attached to the electrode.

This apparatus includes an image reader to read and input image information; a keyboard to input character information; a recognizing unit for recognizing the character information in the image information inputted by the image reader; and an image processor for performing the editing of characters on the basis of the result by the recognizing unit. The character information includes lines of character strings, paragraphs in document information, spaces between words, spaces between characters, hyphens, or positions of words. The image processor means performs the image editing processes such as right alignment, deletion, rewriting, insertion, search, and the like with respect to the character information recognized by the recognizing unit. With this system, the character data inputted from the keyboard and the image data read by the image reader can be processed at the same level, so that the new documents can be freely produced.

There is an image processing system comprising: a storage device to store the binarized image; a dividing circuit to divide the storage space in the storage device into rectangular meshes of a predetermined size in which at least one character is included; a discriminating circuit to discriminate the image area included in the mesh; and an encoder to compress and encode the image area on the bases of the first or second encoding method in accordance with the result of the discrimination of the discriminating circuit. This system may include the first or second decoder to decode the image information in correspondence to the first or second encoder. The second encoding method is based on a dot level. When continuous white or blank meshes exist in the image area, namely, no black pixel exists in the image area, the run length, i.e., the number of blank meshes is encoded. With this system, the binarized image signal can be data compressed and stored with a high degree of efficiency and can be decoded as necessary, and a data compressibility is improved.
