Liquid crystalline compounds are disclosed which are expressed by the following general formula (1) ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents a branched alkyl group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms, ring A represents 1,4-phenylene group or 1,4-cyclohexylene group, Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 independently represent a single bond or 1,2-ethylene group, respectively, X.sub.1, X.sub.2, X.sub.3, and X.sub.4 independently represent fluorine atom or hydrogen atom, respectively, and Y.sub.1 represents oxygen atom or a single bond. The compounds are excellent in compatibility with other liquid crystalline compounds, and have a large positive value of dielectric anisotropy, extremely low viscosity, extremely high specific resistance (high voltage holding ratio), and excellent UV stability.

It is possible to provide a liquid crystal composition having a large .DELTA.n, a low viscosity and a high voltage-holding ratio, and exhibiting a nematic liquid crystal phase within a broad temperature range and having a very high .DELTA..epsilon. and a low driving voltage, and preferably used for TFT. Further it is possible to provide a novel liquid crystalline compound preferred as a component for the liquid crystal composition.

Liquid crystal compositions are provided which have a particularly excellent miscibility at low temperatures, properly large .DELTA.n, and small Vth and viscosity while satisfying several characteristics required of liquid crystal composition for AM-LCD. Disclosed are liquid crystal compositions containing, as a first component, at least one compound expressed by general formula either (I-1) or (I-2), and containing, as a second component, at least one compound expressed by any one of general formulas (II-1) to (II-7) ##STR1## wherein n is an integer of 1 to 10, Z.sup.1 represents --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 -- or single bond, X represents F or OCF.sub.3, Y represents H or F, and m is 0 or 1. The liquid crystal compositions of the present invention are useful as liquid crystal material for low voltage in several modes such as active matrix mode and STN mode.

The present invention is to provide a liquid crystal composition which has particularly a high upper limit temperature of a nematic phase, a low lower limit temperature of the nematic phase and a small birefringence while satisfying general characteristics required for the liquid crystal composition for an AM-LCD. Liquid crystal compositions are disclosed which comprise a component I comprising at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by Formula (I-1) or (I-2) as described in the specification, a component II comprising at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by Formulas (II-1) to (II-8) as described in the specification and a component III comprising at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by Formulas (III-1) to (III-5) as described in the specification.
