    摘要: The invention relates to an indexable milling insert (3) having a polygonal basic shape, comprising four peripheral sides, which meet each other in pairs in one the one hand two acute corners (15), and on the other hand two obtuse corners (16). Between chip surfaces (17) on the top side of the insert and flank surfaces (18) along the peripheral sides, cutting edges (19) are formed, which individually comprise on the hand a major edge portion (20), and, on the other hand, a rounded minor edge portion (21), formed in connection with an acute corner (15). Characteristic of the invention is the combination that the individual major edge portion (20) is slightly arched and that at least one connecting surface (4) is formed in the bottom side of the insert, of the type that comprises a plurality of parallel ridges spaced-apart by grooves having a cross-section-wise tapering shape and which are intended to co-operate with an analogous connecting surface adjacent to a chip channel in a cutting-insert-carrying milling head.

    摘要: A milling cutter with tangentially mounted cutting inserts includes cutter pockets that are arranged at one end of the cutter body such that the screws for retaining the inserts generally radiate from the cutter's center. The cutter pockets are designed to secure a generally rectangular insert with eight or less cutting edges. The number of inserts and corresponding flutes vary as a function of the diameter of the cutter body. For example, four inserts with corresponding flutes are mounted on a 1.25″ diameter cutter body, and three inserts with corresponding flutes are mounted on a 1.00″ diameter cutter body. The increased number of flutes provide for increased metal removal rates and higher feed rates, as compared to an inserted ball nose mill or end mill. The cutter pockets are angled such that there is sufficient clearance under the insert cutting edges and present a “reverse lead” so the cutter assembly can produce a slightly undercut profile on the workpiece, or fixturing of almost five degrees so the radius generated on the workpiece can be nearly the same as that generated by a ball nose mill. The cutting inserts include facets for generating very good surface finishes on the workpiece.

    摘要: An end mill type rotary cutting tool and associated cutting inserts that collectively compensate for radial pocket runout, thereby eliminating overlap marks in a machined work piece. The tool has pockets arrayed in helical flutes such that after one insert has abraded the work piece, a subsequent flute makes an overlapping pass. The inserts are so mounted in the cutting tool and have curved corners configured such that no degree of pocket runout due to manufacturing tolerances will cause any portion of the cutting edge of any insert to form an incuse cut in the work piece which penetrates the machined surface by more than the manufacturing tolerance. Thus overlap of inserts eliminate outward projections in the machined work piece and dimensions and configuration of the inserts and their pockets eliminate inward gouges, thereby eliminating visible overlap marks in the work piece.

    摘要: A cutter system that is designed to create a continuous cutting true helix while having cutting inserts that are indexable on at least two cutting edges by rotating the cutting insert. High positive radial and axial rakes enable free cutting machining with a fine finish and low horsepower consumption. The back face of the insert is substantially flat and is used for face contact on lockup with a mounting pocket on the cutter body when the insert screw is tightened. The mounting pocket is designed for ease of manufacture to limit tolerance buildup to ensure repeatable insert positioning and to maintain accuracy for a fine cutting finish. The insert screw hole is placed in the cross hole location for allowing an unobstructed cutting face and a larger diameter center core in the cutter body. The larger core creates maximum strength and allows longer cutting lengths. Prior to grinding, the insert blank can be used for multiple diameters of cutters. After grinding the insert blank, the inserts are made specific to the cutting diameter for which they were ground or a compromised grind may be employed for use with multiple cutting diameters.

Cutting plates are arranged on the seats, whose cutting edges, as well as possibly cutting edges 41, 42, are set identically, i.e. which cover each other completely in the circumferential direction. Because of this, respectively two cutting edges are active for the drilling operation, as well as for the milling operation, which increases the metal cutting yield and allows the same advancement when drilling, as well as when milling. The slot-drilling cutter is free of lateral forces because of the symmetrical design, which permits a high degree of working precision in spite of large advancement moves.

    摘要: A rotatable milling tool includes a body, and at least one set of circumferentially spaced cutting members that are intersected by a common plane oriented perpendicularly to a longitudinal center axis of the body. The set of cutting members includes at least three cutting members mounted in an envelope surface of the body. Each cutting member includes a flank surface and a cutting edge disposed adjacent to the flank surface. Each cutting edge has axially spaced apart ends. The flanked surface of each cutting member forms a clearance angle with a tangent extending through the respective cutting edge. The flank surface of the insert has a larger clearance angle than the flank surfaces of at least two other inserts in the same set. During a milling operation, the cutting members with smaller clearance angles tend to produce stability and vibration-free rotation, while the cutting member having the larger clearance angle ensures a high precision (smooth) machining.
