摘要:
A pair of adjacent valves (intake or exhaust) are operated by a single cam lobe on an engine camshaft via a bucket tappet, the arrangement being such that both the bucket tappet and the valves are rotatable during engine operation to reduce wear thereof. Preferably, a hydraulic lash adjuster is operatively associated with the bucket tappet and with a thrust member engaging the free stem ends of the valves.

The invention relates to a valve-controlled system, particularly for use in an internal combustion engine, comprising a valve stem and a valve disc extending at an oblique angle to the axis of the valve stem. The valve disc is adapted to be lifted from an associated valve seat and is non-circular and preferably elliptical. By means of a turning drive the valve is adpated to be rotated to open and close chambers or passages which open into the valve seat.

A poppet valve has a threaded end of its stem. A coiled valve spring is provided with a valve spring retainer having a central bore for the valve stem, a circular groove for the spring, and a first ball bearing race on the opposite face from the spring groove. A valve retainer has a threaded bore and a second ball bearing race. A set of ball bearings is disposed in the spring retainer race, the valve stem is inserted through the spring and spring retainer, and the valve retainer is threaded onto the valve stem engaging the ball bearings by the second race. The ball bearing assembly thus permits the valve to rotate with respect to the spring and spring retainer during operation. A lock nut is used to lock the assembly.

A valve rotator rotates a valve in an internal combustion engine about the axis of the stem of the valve. The valve is biased closed by a valve biasing spring. The valve rotator includes a body attached to and rotatable with the valve stem. The body has at least one groove therein extending at least partially around said valve stem. A coil spring element is longitudinally disposed within the groove. A collar receives the valve biasing spring force and encircles the valve stem adjacent the body. A pair of spring washers encircle said valve stem and are interposed between the collar and the coil spring element. One of the spring washers side loads the coils of said coil spring element when the valve is closed. The other of the spring washers acts between the collar and the one spring washer and isolates surges of the valve spring of a predetermined magnitude from the one spring washer and thereby from the coils of the coil spring element.

An improved valve rotator includes a plurality of biasing springs which are effective to urge associated balls toward the shallow ends of ramps formed between a pair of housing members. The total force applied against the balls by the biasing springs is sufficient to hold the housing members apart against the influence of a valve spring when the valve is in a closed position. Upon movement of the valve toward an open position, the valve spring force increases to a magnitude sufficient to cause the balls to move down the associated ramps against the influence of the biasing springs. As the balls move down the ramps, rotational movement of the balls causes one of the housing members to rotate relative to the other with a resulting rotation of the valve as it opens. As the valve subsequently moves toward the closed position, the valve spring force decreases and the ball biasing springs are effective to move the balls up the ramps to separate the two housing members against the influence of the valve spring. The separating movement between the two housing members is in a direction in which the valve is closed so that the separating movement promotes the closing of the valve. To prevent reverse rotation of the valve as it is closed, a one-way clutch arrangement is utilized to inhibit relative rotation between the housing members as they separate and the balls move up the ramps.

A mechanism for producing a rotary movement at a valve of an internal combustion engine which essentially consists of a nonrotating and of a rotatable part, of a cup-spring arranged between these two parts and of balls running on inclined surfaces whereby the inclined surfaces are arranged between the nonrotatable and rotatable parts at the latter and the cup spring is supported at the rotatable part by way of a large number of balls.
