Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for estimating wave properties of a body of water. A computer-implemented system obtains measurement data for a duration of time from an inertial measurement unit (IMU) onboard an underwater device, generates model input data based on at least the measurement data obtained at the plurality of time points, and processes the model input data to generate model output data indicating one or more wave properties using a machine-learning model. The system further determines, based on at least the one or more wave properties, whether the device is safe to be deployed.

Abstract: A system for reducing plasma instability is disclosed. The system includes: an outer electrode having a first end and a second end spaced from the first end; and an inner electrode disposed inside of a void defined within the outer electrode and arranged coaxial with the outer electrode. The inner electrode includes: a base end defined by the first end of the outer electrode; and an apical end spaced from the base end. The system includes a fiber injector configured to inject a frozen fiber into the void from the apical end of the inner electrode; an electrode power source configured to energize the outer electrode and the inner electrode, and thereby, cause a plasma contained within the outer electrode to flow axially along the frozen fiber; and a frozen fiber power source configured to drive an electrical pulse to the frozen fiber.

Abstract: Systems and methods for designing a hybrid neural network comprising at least one physical neural network component and at least one digital neural network component. A loss function is defined within a design space composed of a plurality of voxels, the design space encompassing one or more physical structures of the at least one physical neural network component and one or more architectural features of the digital neural network. Values are determined for at least one functional parameter for the one or more physical structures, and the at least one architectural parameter for the one or more architectural features, using a domain solver to solve Maxwell's equations so that a loss determined according to the loss function is within a threshold loss. Final structures are defined for the at least one physical neural network component and the digital neural network component based on the values.

The method additionally includes applying a trained task-specific head to the set of feature values to generate a task-specific output to accomplish a second robot vision task, where the trained task-specific head has been trained to accomplish the second robot vision task based on previously generated feature values from the trained dense network, where the second robot vision task is different from the first robot vision task. The method also includes controlling the robotic device to operate in the environment based on the task-specific output generated to accomplish the second robot vision task.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a storage device, for electric grid asset detection are enclosed. An electric grid asset detection method includes: obtaining overhead imagery of a geographic region that includes electric grid wires; identifying the electric grid wires within the overhead imagery; and generating a polyline graph of the identified electric grid wires. The method includes replacing curves in polylines within the polyline graph with a series of fixed lines and endpoints; identifying, based on characteristics of the fixed lines and endpoints, a location of a utility pole that supports the electric grid wires; detecting an electric grid asset from street level imagery at the location of the utility pole; and generating a representation of the electric grid asset for use in a model of the electric grid.

Abstract: A nuclear radiation detector is disclosed. The detector includes a housing including therein: a scintillator; and a multi-pixel optical sensor positioned, relative to the scintillator, to receive photons emitted by the scintillator in response to interactions with nuclear radiation. The housing isolates the scintillator and the multi-pixel optical sensor from external light. The detector includes one or more processors operably connectable to the multi-pixel optical sensor; and one or more data stores coupled to the processors having instructions stored thereon which cause the processors to perform operations. The operations include: responsive to the multi-pixel optical sensor detecting photons emitted by the scintillator, receiving, from the multi-pixel optical sensor, data signals indicating 1) spatial locations of individual pixels that detected the photons and 2) temporal data indicating when the detections occurred; and generating, from the data signals, a spatially and temporally resolved image of radiation incident on the scintillator.
