When the functional element is attached to the sheet metal part, the narrow end of the cone-shaped region of said metal part is clamped in an annular protrusion, formed by the rivet section. A method of permanently attaching a fastening element, such as a nut or bolt to panels having a range of panel thicknesses, such as the metal panels used by the automotive and appliance industries. The fastening element includes a tubular barrel portion and preferably an annular bearing face surrounding the barrel portion. The method includes punching a hole in the panel, then plasticly deforming and drawing the panel surrounding the hole into a dome or frusto-conically shaped portion. The panel hole is thus enlarged to receive the fastener element barrel portion from adjacent the apex of the frusto-conically shaped panel portion and the bearing face is then driven against the panel, deforming the panel to a generally planar shape. The panel surrounding the hole is thereby driven against the tubular barrel portion which, in the preferred embodiment, includes radially projecting ribs, providing securement against rotation even in very thin panels. Finally, the free end of the barrel portion is deformed radially outwardly and preferably squeezed to form a secure interlock between the fastening element and the panel.

A ring-like recess is provided radially within the ring-shaped sheet metal contact surface in the flange part and excess material for the shaft part which arises during manufacture of the ribs providing security against rotation is located within the ring recess. Further designs of the press-in element and also of a component assembly and methods for the manufacture of the press-in element and of the component assembly are described.

The invention relates to a functional element comprising a longitudinal axis, a body part, a hollow pressed part, an annular supporting surface which is arranged on the body part, substantially extended in a perpendicular direction with respect to the longitudinal axis and is radially displaced away from the pressed part and an annular groove which axially extends and is embodied in the body part radially inside the supporting surface. Locking ribs are preferably provided and at least partly cross the annular groove and the free end of the pressed part is provided with an annular cutting edge. The invention functional element is characterized in that an annular bulge is embodied on the pressed part between the annular supporting surface and the free end of the pressed part and an annular cavity is embodied around said pressed part between the bulge and the front free end thereof. An assembly component consisting of the functional element combined with a metal sheet, a method for producing the assembling component and a method for producing the functional element are also disclosed.
