It is an object of the present invention to provide an optical waveguide module in which, under the high temperature and high humidity, degradation of characteristics does not occur and which has strength to the oscillation, simple structure, and high reliability. A module unit 30 is formed by bonding a connector 32 provided at one end of a single-optical fiber cable 22 and a connector 31 provided at one end of a ribbon optical fiber cable 21 at both ends of a waveguide substrate 35 having a 1.times.4 branch optical waveguide by an adhesive having light transmission properties. The module unit 30 is provided in a housing 10, and at least a connecting portion between the optical waveguide and the optical fiber cable is covered with the resin contained in the housing 10. The housing 10 is sealed with a cover unit 15, and the single-optical fiber cable 22 and the ribbon optical fiber cable 21 are tightly inserted into a respective hole at end walls of the housing 10 and led out to the outside.

The first process for producing an optical fiber coupler includes a first step wherein at least one of the optical fibers to be used is stripped of the coating, a second step in which the bare portion of that optical fiber is heated for a predetermined time to diffuse the dopants, a third step wherein the other optical fibers which have not been heat-treated are stripped of their coating, a fourth step in which the bare portions of all the optical fibers are heated as they are brought into intimate contact, thereby forming a unitary portion, and a fifth step wherein the unitary portion is drawn via heating to form the coupling portion of an optical fiber coupler. The second process for producing an optical fiber coupler includes stripping the coating from at least one optical fiber, fixing the fiber so as to impart an axial stress thereto and then heating the bare portion of the stripped optical fiber thereby thinning the diameter of the heated portion, and then proceeding in the same manner as described with respect to the third through fifth steps of the first embodiment of the present invention. The processes according to the present invention enable a wide-band optical fiber coupler to be easily produced without using optical fibers of different structures but using optical fibers of identical structures.

The invention provides an optical-coupler reinforcing member for fixing and reinforcing a fiber-coupler body and a method of performing the reinforcing. The reinforcing member includes heat-shrinkage tubes which are shrunk by heating, and a hollow protection pipe provided in the heat-shrinkage tubes. Cylindrical heat-fusible adhesive members are provided on opposite ends of the protection pipe, and heating is made such that a fusing portion of an optical-fiber coupler body is inserted through the reinforcing member so that the heat-fusible adhesive members and the heat-shrinkage tubes are shrunk by heating to thereby fix and reinforce the optical coupler body.

Barium sulfate having a specific crystal structure and optical characteristics is disclosed. The crystals have a plate-like structure of which the aspect ratio is 5-100 and the ratio of the square of the circumference of the plate and the area of the orthogonal projection plane is 20:1-150:1. In a preferred embodiment, a thin film of 25 .mu.m thickness with 20% by weight of the barium sulfate powder concentration has a scattering transmittance of 70% or greater and a total transmittance of 85% or greater. The cosmetic compositions to which the barium sulfate is incorporated exhibits excellent extendibility and adhesion to the skin and can effectively hide the spots or freckles on the skin. The cosmetic composition satisfies both the fine naked skin feeling and the skin covering effect, which have never been satisfied by conventional cosmetic compositions.
