摘要: In a multilayer optical recording medium having three or more recording layers, when data is recorded on a recording layer far away from an incident surface of laser light, and especially on a recording layer farthest away from the incident surface of the laser light, by applying the laser light, the recording power margin of the farthest recording layer allows for a variation in the optimal recording sensitivity even if the transmittance of the recording layers located between the laser light incident surface side and the target recording layer is varied due to existing recordings and the amount of the laser light passing therethrough is also varied. In this case, the recording layer which is the farthest from an incident surface of laser light has a phase change recording film, and the recording layer which is the nearest from the incident surface of the laser light has a write-once read-multiple recording film.

摘要: A method for setting recording power of recording light, capable of an appropriate setting for a multilayer optical recording medium. The recording power of the recording light for an information recording layer of the multilayer optical recording medium to be irradiated with, is set by: evaluating an information recording layer to be evaluated for recording power when all the information recording layer(s) lying closer to a light incident surface than the information recording layer to be evaluated does is/are in a low transmittance state; evaluating the information recording layer to be evaluated for recording power when all the information recording layer(s) lying closer to the light incident surface than the information recording layer to be evaluated does is/are in a high transmittance state; and determining ground information for setting recording power, based on these values of the recording power.

摘要: In an optical information medium having an information bearing surface having projections and depressions and/or capable of forming recorded marks, a functional layer is added. The information borne on the information bearing surface can be read by using reading light of a wavelength longer than 4NA·PL wherein PL is the minimum size of the projections and depressions or the recorded marks and NA is the numerical aperture of a reading optical system, setting the power of the reading light within such a range that the functional layer does not change its complex index of refraction, and irradiating the reading light to the information bearing surface constructed by the functional layer or to the information bearing surface through the functional layer or to the functional layer through the information bearing surface. The medium enables reading at a high resolution beyond the diffraction limit.

摘要: The optical recording medium includes a first information layer including a first recording film having an extinction coefficient of 0.4 or less at a wavelength of a laser beam used for recording and reproducing, and a second information layer including a second recording film consisting essentially of the same constituent elements as those of the first recording film and having an extinction coefficient of 0.4 or less. Among the first and second information layers, the first information layer is located further away from a laser beam-incident surface than the second information layer located closest to the incident surface. The first information layer further includes a light absorbing film having an extinction coefficient of 1.5 or more at the wavelength of the laser beam, the extinction coefficient of the light absorbing film being greater than that of the first recording film.

摘要: An optical recording and reading method capable of enhancing the design flexibility of recording layers of an optical recording medium and performing accurate optical recording and reading operations. The optical recording and reading method is one for recording and reading an optical recording medium having three or more recording layers by irradiating the same with laser light using an optical recording and reading apparatus. When an optical recording medium is mounted on the optical recording and reading apparatus, the positions of the recording layers of the optical recording medium are measured using the laser light.

摘要: In an optical information medium comprising an information recording layer having a mark train of marks and spaces, the mark train is read out by scanning it with a laser beam and detecting a light intensity change pattern of reflected laser beam. Provided that the reflected laser beam includes polarized light components which define an angle θ with the mark train, a polarized light component giving θ=0 is x0 component, and a polarized light component giving θ=90° is y0 component, the mark train is read out utilizing at least a light intensity change of x0 component. When pits or recorded marks having a size approximate to or below the resolution limit are read out, the present invention allows high read outputs to be obtained and prevents omission of readout signals.
