A method of transmitting packet data to a receiver in a communication system using a Hybrid ARQ technique is disclosed. In accordance with one illustrative embodiment of the present invention, an index representative of how much the first packet being transmitted such as a signal-to-noise (Eb/No) ratio is compared to a predetermined threshold value when an error is occurred during the step of decoding the packet. If the index is greater than or equal to the threshold value, the first packet transmitted is stored in a buffer and a receiver requests to transmit a second additional packet encoded with a lower code rate. On the other hand, if the index is less than the threshold value, the receiver requests to re-transmit the first packet encoded with the same code rate.

A method for controlling power of a forward common channel is disclosed. The present method allows a base station to obtain an initial power value for a closed-loop power control of mobile stations when a base station transmits data to a plurality of mobile stations through an a forward common channel. Particularly, the present method permits a base station to determine an initial power according to either a variation of reception power transmitted from a mobile station or a variation of the PCBs transmitted from a mobile station.

An apparatus and method for controlling power in a CDMA system using antenna diversity. The power control apparatus comprises a CDMA base band/IF transmitter for processing an information signal to output K IF signals, K RF modules for converting the K IF signals from the CDMA base band/IF transmitter into K RF signals and transmitting the converted K RF signals through K transmitting antennas, a receiver for receiving a signal from a mobile terminal through a receiving antenna and processing the received signal to output K power control bits and decoded data, and a processor for generating K data channel gains in response to the K power control bits from the receiver and outputting the generated K data channel gains to the CDMA base band/IF transmitter to control transmission powers of the K transmitting antennas. According to the present invention, the transmission power control operation can individually be performed with respect to antennas at the transmitting stage of a base station in consideration of different channel environments.
