A web holding unit is provided just in front of a cutting and splicing unit. The holding unit is comprised mainly of multiple pass rollers, a pass roller motor, a vacuum pump, and an up/down cylinder. As the unwinding of an old web comes to an end, a rod of the up/down cylinder extends, and the pass rollers of the holding unit abut against the old web. The pass roller rotates at lower speed than web transport speed, and during the transport, the old web is drawn onto the pass rollers by sucking of the pump. The old web is transported to the cutting and splicing unit with a position thereof being regulated by the holding means.

A device for connecting a trailing end of a previously drawn-out web from a first web roll to a leading end portion of a newly drawn-out web from a second web roll has a vertical guide unit, a drawing-out unit, a feeding unit, an adhesive tape supplying unit and cutting members. The previously drawn-out web which is running vertically downward is guided by the vertical guide unit. The leading end portion of a web is drawn out from a new web roll by the drawing-out unit and moved vertically downward by the feeding unit in the vicinity of and along the previously drawn-out web. An adhesive tape is attached to the leading end portion of the newly drawn-out web by the adhesive tape supplying unit. The leading end of the newly drawn-out web is connected to the trailing end of the previously drawn-out web by the adhesive tape. After the previously and newly drawn-out webs have been connected together, the excess portions of both webs are removed by the cutting members.

An intermittently operating unwinding apparatus has a separating device with which a web-end is formed on the lifting-out of an empty spool from the guide ways of an unwind unit. A holding device holds the web-end in a plane which extends parallel to the guide ways, on which a new winding roll located in waiting position rests with its roll axle. The machine has a splicing unit with a cross member arranged parallel to the guide ways to which the beginning of the web of the new parent roll can be joined. During transport of the new parent roll out of the waiting position into its unwinding position the splicing unit is moved by dogs engaging at the roll axle against the holding device and the web-beginning joined to the web-end.

Apparatus for splicing the trailing end of an old web to a new web comprises a pair of tangential fixed rollers between which the old web is fed. At each side of the fixed rollers two further rollers are supported by arms pivotted on a pin lying in the tangent plane. The old web runs over one of these rollers, while on the other the starting end of the new web is supported with a double-sided adhesive tape thereon. The roller above which the old web runs is pivotted above the other roller so that the web runs between the rollers and the webs are spliced by raising the lower roller, as the old web runs out. A cutting device separates the tail of the old web. The upper roller is then moved back to its original position for preparing a new web.

An improved splicing apparatus has a splicer head comprising a pair of opposed upper and lower traveling carriages each of which supports an idler roller, a nip bar which is swingable on its carriage between a ready position downstream from its corresponding idler roller and a web preparation position at the front of the splicer head and means for pushing the nip bar towards the opposite nip bar when both carriages are in their advanced positions. A knife carriage located on the head between the two nip bar carriages retracts when either nip bar carriage retracts to permit the nip bar on the opposite carriage to be swung to its web preparation position. The knife carriage supports a knife which can be actuated momentarily to urge it from a normal retracted position to an advanced position wherein it intercepts one of the nip bars when that nip bar is in its splicing position against the opposite nip bar. The present splicer facilitates preparation of a ready web in a quick convenient and safe manner and it also produces splices between webs having little or no tails in a reliable and efficient manner.

A web supply apparatus of the type wherein web is unwound alternately from each of two similar mobile roll stands each movable in the direction of its web roll axis between an unwind position usually in line with a web consuming machine and a loading position laterally offset from the path of the web. The two roll stands generally move on floor supported tracks between their loading and unwind positions and each is equipped with a portion of a web splicing device so constructed that, in the loading position a ready web roll having been picked up from the floor has its leading end so prepared and mounted that when the ready roll stand is moved to the unwind position, the ready web may be spliced automatically to the trailing end of the running web by the co-action of the two splicer halves mounted on the unwinding and ready roll stands. A compact knife assembly is provided wherein the knife is secured directly to a fluid powered actuator and is positioned to sever the web at the same point in space regardless of variables in the operation of the splicer.
