A core-catcher bowl (18) guides the well core (26) in the apparatus (10). An outer barrel (14) is attached to the drill bit (12) and contains the core-catcher (18). An inner liner (20) positioned in the outer barrel (14) receives the well core (26). An oil absorbent sponge-like member (22) is contained in the inner liner (20) with a diameter (24) for receiving the well core (26). The oil absorbent sponge-like member (22) absorbs the fluids contained in the well core (26).

A packaged core is obtained using a conventional core barrel system. A lining is provided in the core sample container of the core barrel. The core barrel is connected to a drill string extending into a borehole. As the drill string is rotated, the core sample moves into the sample container and inside of the lining. When the core barrel arrives at the surface, the sample core may be removed from the core barrel packaged in the lining. The core may be examined on site or the ends of the lining closed and the core completely packaged for shipment to the laboratory.

A core barrel device for producing and retrieving subterranean cores, particularly from soft or unconsolidated formations, utilizes a fluid-pressure collapsible sleeve above the corer to receive and hold the core material and permit its retrieval in its original subterranean condition. Pressure responsive valves maintain a fluid pressure behind the collapsible sleeve to retain it in the collapsed position until the core is received in the sleeve and also permit fluid behind the sleeve to exhaust as the core enters the sleeve while the sleeve continues to offer lateral pressure support for the core and also remains collapsed above the core. When the coring device is withdrawn, a small amount of core material falls from the lower portion of the core barrel and the lower portion of the sleeve collapses to retain the remainder of the core within the core barrel.
