Abstract: The brakes of a bicycle are actuated in response to rotation of the pedal crank in a reverse direction. The brake actuating mechanism includes an actuating member which is connected to the pedal crank by a freewheel and a slip coupling. The freewheel is disengaged during forward rotation of the pedal crank, and it is engaged during reverse rotation of the pedal crank to move the actuating member and operate the brakes. During heavy braking, the slip coupling reduces the force exerted by the actuating mechanism on the brake operating cables. Movement of the actuating member also unblocks a freewheel which normally blocks reverse rotation of a driven wheel of the bicycle. This unblocking action prevents the pedals from locking after heavy braking.

Abstract: A hand operated hydraulic bicycle brake includes a brake pad holding unit located in back of the front fork of a bicycle. A flexible fluid line couples a master cylinder located on the handlebars of the bicycle to a slave cylinder located adjacent the rim of the front wheel of the bicycle. Actuation of the slave cylinder forces the brake pad into contact with the rim, and further actuation of the master cylinder causes the unit to pivot to bring a second brake pad into contact with the wheel rim.

Abstract: Mechanisms are disclosed for actuating the conventional caliper brakes of bicycles by back pedalling the drive sprocket. In one embodiment, an overrunning clutch drives a cable drum which tensions an actuator cable for a caliper brake. In a further embodiment, a pawl riding on the drive sprocket of the bicycle extends a linkage which pulls a cable to actuate the caliper brake. In still another embodiment, a spiral gear is rotated upon back pedalling of the bicycle drive sprocket to tension a brake actuating cable.
