摘要: Passive apparatus for absorbing the kinetic energy of a collision to prot an underwater structure from damage in a collision which includes a ring suspended by a ring support system so that the ring is positioned between the structure and the expected path of potentially impacting objects. The ring support system includes eight rigid rods which have one end coupled to one of four symmetrically disposed supporting pylons by spherical sleeve bushings and their other end coupled by spherical rod ends to one of four standoff members that are fixed to the top surface of the ring at equal intervals around its circumference. A shock absorber is coupled between each supporting pylon and the ring midway between standoff members by spherical rod ends. The dimensions of the rigid rods and their attachment points to the supporting pylon and the ring are chosen so that the ring may pivot on the rods against the resistance of the shock absorbers in response to an impact, but cannot strike the enclosed object. The preferred embodiment employs a shock absorber in which forces are dissipated when two concentric cylinders are compressively displaced to force sea water from an interior chamber formed by the cylinders. As the cylinders are forced together, the sea water is forced out of the chamber through tapered slots in the outside surface of the inner cylinder. As the cylinders are forced together, the size of the orifices provided by the tapered slots is continuously reduced so that progressively greater force is required to eject the sea water from the chamber.

摘要: A selectively floatable protective shroud is disclosed for protecting a boat hull from fouling by marine organisms. The assembly consists of an inflatable, elongated toroidal bladder with an inner opening larger than the circumference of the hull of the boat at its water line. The bladder has an inflation nozzle which is connected to a gas pump, for controllably inflating the bladder. A continuous, flexible, water impervious shroud has a circumferential edge mounted about the circumference of the toroidal bladder for protecting the boat hull, when deployed about the boat. By controllably inflating the bladder, the shroud is selectively brought from a submerged position beneath the boat to a deployed position enveloping the hull of the boat so as to protect the hull from fouling by marine organisms. A water pump is disclosed being connected to a water drain nozzle mounted on the flexible shroud, for controllably pumping out sea water from the region between the flexible shroud and the boat hull. Various embodiments for guide members are disclosed which are mounted to the sea bed floor and are connected to the bladder for guiding the shroud from the submerged position to the deployed position enveloping the hull of the boat. Various control and interlock mechanisms are disclosed for conveniently operating the system from onboard the boat.

摘要: In a marine vessel hull cleaning device wherein a floating platform has spaced ways between which a vessel to be cleaned passes lengthwise, at least one transom scrubbing brush is supported from the platform, arranged to move clear of the vessel when the vessel moves between the ways, to move into transom engaging position and to be held in engagement with the transom of the vessel. Preferably, the vessel is both held in a position to permit the transom scrubbing brush to engage it and is moved up and down relative to the transom scrubbing brush by bottom scrubbing brushes which rotate in such a way as to tend to move the vessel astern.

摘要: A boat hull cleaning apparatus having a plurality of uniquely designed brushing units is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a plurality of brushing devices each device being disposed in an associated housing. The brushing device comprises a rotatable base member having an axis of rotation, and a plurality of cleaning bristles extending outwardly from the base member. The bristles are disposed on the base member so as to be substantially parallel to the axis of rotation. A motor is disposed in the housing having a rotatable shaft. The brushing device is disposed at one end of the shaft and a propeller is disposed at the other end of the shaft. Rotation of the shaft causes (i) the propeller to drive the housing toward the boat hull; and (ii) the base member to rotate about its axis. The boat hull cleaning apparatus of the present invention has particular utility in thoroughly cleaning various shaped boat hulls and removing tenacious growths therefrom.

摘要: A method of applying a protective coating to a surface under water which comprises forcing a protective coating composition through an applicator pad, for example using compreseed air, at a pressure at least equal to the ambient pressure of the water at the depth at which the coating is applied, and applying the coating composition to the surface by a smearing action of the pad. Apparatus for carrying out the method includes a porous applicator pad, a reservoir for a protective coating composition to be supplied to the applicator pad, a sensing device for sensing the ambient water pressure, and a control device operative to maintain the pressure at which the composition is supplied to the applicator pad at least equal to the sensed pressure. The applicator pad may be a layer of foamed plastics material having an open interconnected cellular structure.

摘要: A floating platform is ballasted and trimmed to allow the passage of a ship through a U-shaped channel. A plurality of cylindrically shaped brushes is brought to bear against the ship''s hull and interconnected motors rotate the brushes to clean fouling from the ship''s hull as it traverses the length of the channel. Locating the platform outside of a harbor permits the cleaning of outgoing ships prior to transoceanic voyages to reduce fuel consumption while incoming ships are cleaned before entry to eliminate the possibility of harbor pollution. Incorporating a suction-pump filter unit in the close vicinity of each rotating brush ensures the collection of removed marine organisms to avoid contamination of surrounding waters. Additionally, a paint roller assembly is included to coat the scrubbed and cleaned surfaces with a new layer of anti-fouling paint to complete preventative maintenance of the hull and to recondition it.
