A cylindrical sintered material is placed in a cavity composed of die, a core disposed in the center of the die, and a pair of upper and lower punches provided within the die and compressed by the upper and lower punches. A gap is provided between an internal circumferential portion of the sintered material and an external circumferential portion of the core. Consequently, when the sintered material is compressed, plastic flow is produced at both ends of the sintered material so that an internal circumferential portions at corresponding portions protrude inward in a radius direction till the internal circumferential portions come into contact with the core, so that slide portions are formed.

Disclosed is a sintered iron alloy, a method of manufacturing the same, a powdered mixture used for manufacturing the same and a method of modifying the surface of the iron alloy. The sintered iron alloy is produced by compacting a powdered mixture comprising: boron or boron compound which is selected from the group consisting of boron oxide, boron sulfide, boron halide, boron hydride, boric acid, borate and tetrafluoroborate; 0.1 to 2.0% by weight of graphite; and iron, and sintering it. Alternatively, the iron alloy is produced by impregnating a modifier containing boron or boron compound, into a green compact, a presintered compact or sintered body which contains iron and carbon, and heating it.

An electrorheological magnetic fluid including an electrically insulating liquid and fine particles dispersed therein is described, wherein the fine particles include a fine magnetic particle as a core, wherein the fine magnetic particle has a surface which is covered by an electroconductive substance, and the fine magnetic particle with its surface covered by the electroconductive substance is completely coated with a surfactant. A process for producing the electrorheological magnetic fluid is also described.
