    Abstract: A securing apparatus for an article, for example a film or slide, to be scanned in an image scanner has a top and a bottom cover. The top cover is provided with a top window permitting the scanning light emitting from the image scanner to pass therethrough. The bottom cover can be selectively collapsibly connected to the top cover. An insertion mechanism is changeably mounted between the top and bottom covers and is provided with a viewing window corresponding to the top window for securing the article between the windows. The windows permit the scanning light emitting from the image scanner to pass therethrough. The changeable insertion mechanism can be configured to accommodate any film or slide having different sizes or orientations.

    Abstract: A plurality of pinch rollers are employed to drive sheets of paper containing material to be scanned past an optical scanner to generate an optical image of the material which is converted into electrical signals. Each pinch roller includes a drive roller which is driven by a synchronized drive mechanism and an idler roller. The support shafts for the idler rollers are supported in elongated bearings which provide limited freedom of motion for the idler rollers in a direction substantially normal to their axes of rotation. A pressure plate has spring fingers which resiliently urge the idler rollers towards the drive rollers to resiliently pinch the paper sheets being driven. In the event that the paper should become jammed and needs to be removed or repositioned, a roller release lever can be actuated to drive the pressure plate so as to permit the idler rollers to move freely in their elongated support bearings. Further, a friction pad is provided which rides on the surface of the paper so that in the event that more that one sheet of paper should pass through the rollers only the lowermost sheet will pass through.

    Abstract: Material such as a document or picture of which an image is to be reproduced or transmitted, as in a facsimile device, is driven by pinch rollers past a light source in a controlled synchronized manner by means of a stepping motor. As the pinch rollers are driven, successive scan line images of the document are channelled through an elongated slit in a light directing channel and through a lens and a rotatably driven color wheel onto a light sensitive device such a linear array formed by a charge-coupled device (CCD). The color wheel has light filters for the primary colors and is synchronized with the scanning. The images received by the CCD are converted thereby to electrical form and appropriately processed for transmission or local utilization. A mechanism is provided to enable the disengagement of the pinch rollers from the material being scanned to avoid damage to such material should it become jammed in the rollers.

    Abstract: A signal regulator regulates an auxiliary signal based upon a primary signal scaled by an external amplifier. The signal regulator receives the primary signal with an unscaled level. Processing circuitry monitors the unscaled level of the primary signal. The primary signal is then output to the external amplifier for scaling, either by amplification or attenuation. The primary signal with a scaled level is in turn received by the signal regulator from the amplifier. The processing circuitry monitors the scaled level of the primary signal from the amplifier, and then generates a gain factor based upon the unscaled level and the scaled level of the primary signal. An auxiliary signal is received by the signal regulator. Adjusting circuitry receives the gain factor from the processing circuitry and adjusts a level of the auxiliary signal based upon the gain factor. The auxiliary signal with the adjusted level is then provided to an external component, for example, a loudspeaker. The signal regulator is particularly useful in regulating the volume of auxiliary audio channels in a surround-sound system based upon the volume of the main or front channels amplified by an audio/video receiver. The signal regulator performs system delay measurements, phase synchronization of the unscaled and scaled primary signals, volume tracking, and consecutive cross-correlation measurements to safe guard against erroneous volume adjustment.
