A time division multiplexing ("TDM") digital matrix intercom system for connecting intercom stations. The system includes a digital switching system receiving audio input communications signals from at least some of the intercom stations, and sending audio input communications signals to at least some of the intercom stations. The digital switching system includes a TDM system for broadcasting on a TDM bus multiple digital communications signals including such digital audio input signals. The TDM system includes one or more interfaces connecting intercom stations with the TDM bus. The system also includes a signal mixer which is capable of receiving from the TDM bus selected ones of the digital audio input signals, and creating and broadcasting on the TDM bus a custom mixed digital audio output communications signal which is a loudness weighted mix of such selected digital audio input signals which at least one of such selected signals optionally being given a larger weight corresponding to a louder volume than others of the selected signals. A custom mixed digital audio output signal thus may be routed to a selected one of the intercom stations as an audio output communications signal. Preferably the system includes an integrated circuit for producing custom output mix signals.

The system comprises a collection of the following modules: a disk controller for reading and writing disk-based media: an I/O processor for moving data between the disk controllers, I/O devices and connection bus, a DSP processor for processing data that exists on the connection bus, and a sample playback processor for performing memory-based polyphonic digital playback attached to the connection bus. The system's modules are connected via a connection bus that allows the transfer of multiple channels of information simultaneously in synchronism with the system's variable sample clock.

A behind-the-ear assistive listening receiver having a housing containing an RF receiver. The housing includes a cavity in which two or more crystal carriers are removably insertable. Each of the crystal carriers contains an oscillation crystal tuned to a particular frequency corresponding to an RF frequency desired to be received by the user. A switch is provided for permitting the user to select one of the oscillation crystals to automatically tune for the RF receiver to the desired RF frequency. Each crystal carrier may contain visible indicia indicating the frequency to which it is tuned, and the carriers may be positioned in the housing so that the indicia are generally visible to others when the receiver is worn by the user. The assistive listening receiver may also include a conventional hearing aid microphone for converting ambient sounds into an electrical hearing aid signal. A mixer is provided within the housing for mixing the hearing aid signal with the RF signal to provide a mixed output signal. The mixer attenuates the maximum hearing aid signal with respect to the maximum RF signal by about 1 to 10 decibels so that the maximum RF signal will be perceptibly louder to the user than the maximum hearing aid signal.

To provide broad bandwidth in a multiple-band directional antenna, the antenna includes an array of parallel horizontal elements, which are: (1) an open-sleeve dipole as the driven element; (2) a trap director element; and (3) trap reflector elements. The driven element includes: (1) a trap central dipole which is center-fed and has sections self-resonant within the bands of 21.0 to 21.45 megahertz and 14.0 to 14.35 megahertz; and (2) two unequal-length sleeves self-resonant at 28.0 to 29.7 megahertz. The director and reflector elements are resonant in the same bands and are spaced and tuned for directivity of the array.

A tape transport has two pinch rollers, either of which presses the tape against the capstan with which that pinch roller coacts in order to advance the tape in the desired direction. When power is off, neither pinch roller should press against its capstan. A retraction mechanism includes a spring acting in a direction to withdraw or retract whichever pinch roller would otherwise bear against its capstan when the power is off. However, when the power is on, the mechanism permits the pinch rollers to function in their usual manner.

The invention reduces variability of the resonant frequency in piezoelectric ceramic transducers having a vibratory assembly comprising a flexible diaphragm carrying a ceramic disk sensor. The clamped edge of the diaphragm is typically offset from the plane of the vibratory assembly and is coupled to that assembly by generally cylindrical structure having flexibility in a radial direction. That flexibility partially isolates the vibratory assembly from effects such as structural variability of the clamping means and differential thermal expansion at the clamp. The degree of that isolation is preferably selected by suitable design of the coupling structure to provide approximate compensation for thermal effects due to other parameters of the system.

A headset having an ear cup with a beveled spherical socket hole which rotatably supports and seats a spherical boom support swivel. The swivel consists of two half ball elements held in registration on an asymmetrical boom through gripping action of an asymmetrical hole in each of the half ball elements. Opposing ramp projections and sockets in the half ball elements bias the half ball elements in opposing rotational motion about the boom axis when the half balls are urged toward each other by a floating spring retainer plate thus producing a torque on the boom which is tightly gripped by the opposing half ball elements. Opposing outward projections on the boom mate with depressions in the half ball elements to prevent longitudinal sliding of the boom opposite the swivel and adjacent the operator's mouth. The swivel is rotatably held in the beveled spherical socket hole by the floating spring retainer plate having a flanged dish forming a ball seat swivel. Screws fastening the floating spring retainer plate to the ear cup adjust the degree of force on the swivel against the socket hole. A stop in the ear cup acting in conjunction with stops on the half ball elements limit travel of the boom to less than 360.degree.. An outward circular projection on each element of the swivel provides additional support for the swivel to prevent gouging of the ear cup by the boom.
