Abstract: Blood flow in human limbs is measured non-invasively by a nuclear magnetic resonance blood flowmeter which includes a pair of polarizing magnets whose fields are stabilized by electromagnets in each pole piece that are energized in accordance with the magnetic flux of the magnets as sensed by a Hall effect sensor. Blood molecules are either self-tagged by the polarizing field or are separately tagged by a tag coil whose field is orthogonal to the polarizing field. Once tagged, the variation in the magnetic moment of the molecule due to the tagging is detected by the variation in voltage in the receiver coil which is located orthogonally to the transmitter coil so as to reduce crosscoupling therebetween. Two sets of scanner coils, one located parallel to and the other orthogonal to the polarizing field directions, respectively, are energized to create a pair of intersecting null planes which act to cancel nuclear magnetic resonance response detected by the receiver everywhere but along the line where the two null planes intersect. By varying the current in the scanner coils, the resulting line of intersection of the null planes can be moved in two dimensions so as to scan the limb thereby allowing blood flow measurement at various locations within the limb.

Abstract: A patient support system adapted for attachment to the chassis of a vehicle. The vehicle has a cargo bed and a midline bisecting the cargo bed. The assembly includes a chassis mounting portion adapted to be attached to a side wall in the bed of the vehicle, a lateral adjustment mechanism attached to the chassis mounting portion and a litter supporting portion attached to the lateral adjustment mechanism. The assembly permits the litter supporting portion to be positioned near or over the midline of the cargo bed to facilitate the loading of a litter onto the litter supporting portion. After the litter lockingly engages the litter supporting portion, the litter supporting portion can be repositioned laterally with respect to the midline of the vehicle bed. In a preferred embodiment, two assemblies, each of which is a mirror image of the other, are attached to opposing walls in the cargo bed of the vehicle. When the assemblies are moved laterally, a corridor is created between adjacent litters that can be used by an attendant to provide life support.

Abstract: A system comprising an assembly of structures and supports operable for installation in a vehicle for the purpose of transporting at least one medical attendant, one patient disposed on a stretcher, and a driver on a small utility vehicle having a flat horizontal surface or “bed”. The invention provides an improved method for evacuating injured people such as, for example, injured victims of a terrorist attack, or injured soldiers from a battlefield, on a relatively narrow vehicle. The supports are arranged so that at least one patient on a stretcher or spineboard can be placed longitudinally in the bed of the vehicle with a medical practitioner positioned adjacent the patient to attend to the patient's medical needs during transport.

Abstract: A modular patient support system adapted to be quickly mounted to utility vehicles such as trucks, buses, vans or trailers, to permit emergency medical workers to rapidly transform standard utility vehicles into specialized ambulances. When not in use, the modular patient support system is easily dismounted and collapsed for warehousing. The modular patient support system comprises a base frame that is used to attach the system to a vehicle. The base frame is oriented parallel and adjacent to a side wall of the vehicle. Two telescoping litter supports are attached to the base frame by hinges having a vertical axis of rotation. The two litter supports can either be extended normal to the base frame in order to support a patient on a litter, or collapsed and folded parallel to the base frame. A seat frame is adjustably attached to the base frame using multiple connecting links. When positioned vertically, the seat bottoms serve as mounting surfaces for medical equipment. When positioned horizontally, the seat frame provides restrained seating for multiple patients. Mounting rails permit the secure attachment of equipment and for the positions of the pieces of equipment to be easily adjusted.
