An intermittent for stepwise transport of film in cinematographic apparatus or printers has a shuttle with a filmengaging claw and a rotary advancing cam with an endless cam face having sections whose configuration satisfies a higher order sine curve and which are tracked by a follower of the shuttle while the claw moves in or counter to the direction of film transport. A first section is tracked by the follower after the claw penetrates into a perforation of the film under the action of an in-out cam and while the claw moves toward engagement with film at the leading end of the perforation. A second section is tracked by the follower while the claw advances the film forwardly; a third section is tracked by the follower while the claw moves rearwardly and away from the film upon completion of a forward stroke but prior to withdrawal of the claw from the perforation by the in-out cam; and a fourth section is tracked by the follower while the claw moves counter to the direction of film transport to move into register with a further perforation.

A sound projector for motion picture film wherein the standard distance between film frames and the corresponding portions of the sound track is maintained during rewinding of film onto the supply reel, even if the film is damaged in the region of several successive perforations. The film which is being withdrawn from the takeup reel engages a sprocket prior to passing around a drum forming part of the sound reproducing unit. The film thereupon reengages the sprocket before it reaches the film gate. Two spring-biased rollers tension the film between the drum and the sprocket. When the motor for the sprocket is operated in reverse, a slide engages and holds the shafts of tensioning rollers in predetermined positions to thus insure that a portion of recorded sound is adjacent to the drum while the corresponding film frame registers with the film gate.

The leader of convoluted motion picture film which is stored on a supply reel in a motion picture camera or projector is automatically intercepted and advanced in a direction toward a takeup reel by a composite intercepting device having a hook which can enter a perforation of the leader while the supply reel rotates in a direction to collect the film. The intercepting device can be moved from an inoperative position by way of a manually operated actuating device which causes a driving wheel to engage a convex surface of the intercepting device whereby the hook of the intercepting device automatically moves toward a catching position in which it bears against the outermost convolution of the film and enters the oncoming perforation. The rotating supply reel causes the intercepted leader to disengage the convex surface from the driving wheel and to move a concave surface of the intercepting device into engagement with the driving wheel whereby the intercepting device, with the leader attached to its hook, automatically returns to its inoperative position. The hook inserts the leader into the nip of two advancing rolls which disengage the leader from the hook and advance the leader toward a takeup reel. The motor for the driving wheel is started in response to movement of the intercepting device from inoperative position and is automatically arrested when the intercepting device reassumes its inoperative position or when the user returns the actuating device to an idle position.

A motion picture projector wherein a stripping mechanism threads the leader of motion picture film has a manually operable lever which carries a friction coupling serving to rotate the shaft for the core of the supply reel in a direction to collect the film while the band of the stripping mechanism engages the outermost film convolution. The coupling becomes ineffective when the convolutions of the film are tightly packed around the core of the supply reel. The shaft for the supply reel can be rotated by the motor which drives the coupling when the operation of the motor is reversed whereby the supply reel collects the film by drawing it off the takeup reel.

A motion picture camera is adapted to operate at a first and second film speed and requires a first and second aperture size at the first and second film speed, respectively. A speed regulator regulates the speed of the camera to the first and second speed, respectively, when connected to the battery through a first and second resistor, respectively. Aperture control means open the aperture to the aperture size corresponding to the first film speed when connected to the battery through a third resistor and open the aperture to the second aperture size corresponding to the second film speed when connected to the source of electrical energy through a fourth resistor. First, second, third and fourth transistors connect the corresponding respective resistors to the battery when in a conductive state. A speed selector switch is externally operable to select the first or second speed. Connected to the speed selector switch is a control transistor which is interconnected with the bases of the first, second, third and fourth transistors in such a way that the first and third resistor is connected to the battery when the speed selector switch is in the first position and that the second and fourth transistors are conductive when the speed selector switch is in the second position.

Each receiver of one branch is paired with a receiver of the other branch and the two pairs of receivers are mirror symmetrical to each other. Each of two mirror symmetrical beams of light which is reflected by the selected portion of an object is directed against one of the two pairs of receivers. The circuit is balanced when exactly one-half of each beam impinges upon each of the respective pair of receivers regardless of eventual lack of uniformity of light intensity in various parts of the light beams. The circuit can be used to adjust the position of an objective in a camera or projector.

The marker of a magazine which is inserted into the camera is scanned by a scanning member which is coupled to the door-locking device of the camera by a looped snapover spring. When the locking device is moved by hand to an inoperative position in which the user can open the door to gain access to the magazine in a camera housing, the spring biases the scanning member to a predetermined starting position. When the door is closed and the user moves the locking member toward operative position, the spring snaps over and shifts the scanning member into engagement with the marker of the inserted magazine. The spring then biases the scanning member against the marker and simultaneously opposes movement of the locking member from operative position.

A voltage divider including a capacitor and the emitter-collector circuit of a transistor is connected across the output of the rectifier. The voltage divider has tap connected to the gate of the thyristor. A voltage proportional to the battery voltage is applied to the base of the transistor. Variations in the emitter-collector resistance of the transistor, which correspond to changes in the battery output voltage determine the cut-in time of the thyristor. When the battery voltage is sufficiently high the thyristor blocks completely.
