The apparatus captures and compresses a preview image, and judges an image complexity and determines a preview compressed setting value according to at least one of a set of factors consisting of a compressed setting, a resolution of the preview image and a size of a compressed preview image. Next, the apparatus captures a to-be-captured image, and determines an initial compressed setting value according to at least one of a set of factors consisting of the image complexity, and the resolution of the to-be-captured image and a compressed image target size, which is a new compressed initial value. Then, the apparatus compresses the image according to the initial compressed setting value to obtain a compressed image approaching a predetermined size or speed up a converging speed of an image compressing loop.

Multiple raw image frames are captured during a capturing period according to a capturing instruction. The raw image frames are compressed respectively, according to a predetermined compression rule, into multiple compressed image frames each of which has a data length after such compression. The compressed image frames are stored according to a predetermined sequence. The data lengths of the compressed image frames stored are compared according to the predetermined sequence. The desired still image frame is obtained through the compressed image frame of which the data length has a unique feature among all the compressed image frames.

The more the amount of high frequency components the preview image has, the higher the image complexity. A to-be-captured image is captured. An initial quantization table is determined according to a set of factors consisting of the image complexity, a resolution of the to-be-captured image and an image compression target.
