摘要: An apparatus and method for minimizing the effects of a common mode voltage signal in downhole logging tools utilized to determine the resistivity of an adjacent portion of a borehole wall. Two current electrodes are energized by an excitation source to create an oscillatory electric field in a borehole wall. A voltage drop across a segment of the borehole wall is measured by two voltage electrodes, and the differential voltage is used in combination with a measured current flow to determine a resistivity value for the borehole wall. A common mode voltage in front of the two voltage electrodes is measured and minimized by controlling the excitation source, thereby reducing the resistivity measurement error.

摘要: A displaced electrode amplifier (“DEA”) for measuring signals from high impedance sources. The amplifier may include an operational amplifier (“op-amp”) configured as a unity gain buffer, with a feedback path to the non-inverting input to at least partly compensate for a parasitic input shunt impedance. In cases where the device is to measure AC signals in high ambient temperatures, the non-inverting input may be coupled via a large resistance to a ground reference that is driven with a second feedback signal to magnify the effective value of the large resistance. Where a differential configuration is desired, one or more tuning resistors may be provided to match responses of different input buffer stages, thereby maximizing the common mode rejection. The disclosed amplifier is suitable for use in oil-based mud resistivity imaging tools but is also suitable for other applications.

摘要: A system and method for calculating the lateral velocity of a rotating drilling tool within a borehole, the system comprising: a pair of accelerometers placed oppositely across the drilling tool axis of rotation and two magnetometers. The method comprises: reading tool radial acceleration signals ar1, ar2, and tangential acceleration signals, at1 and at3, obtained with a quadrature accelerometer detection system; reading Bx and y, the tool's magnetic phase data, from two orthogonally placed magnetometers; determining, &phgr;, the rotational phase angle of the drilling tool relative to the earth's gravity field by first determining &phgr;m, the tool's magnetic phase, and &phgr;), the phase shift between the tool's magnetic phase and gravity phase; and processing the foregoing data to yield a lateral tool velocity which optionally compensates for the effect of gravity on the accelerometers, or converts the lateral tool velocity from the tool reference frame to the borehole reference frame, or does both.

摘要: A protection circuit couples to and protects a battery cell. The protection circuit generally limits the current that can flow through cell when the voltage across the cell falls to a predetermined minimum threshold, such as might occur if the cell is passivated, fails in service, or is reaching the end of its useful life. The protection circuit preferably includes a transistor, which couples in series with the cell and limits the current therethrough. By limiting the current through the cell when its voltage reaches a minimum threshold, the voltage on the cell will not fall below the minimum safe level. A bypass means (e.g., a diode) also is included to conduct current around the cell when its current has been limited by the transistor.
