Abstract: Method and means for creating an interaction between a beam of particles and electromagnetic waves, particularly at optical frequencies, wherein a high velocity beam of particles, such as electrons, is passed through a suitable interaction zone, for example, in the form of an optically transparent dielectric target, such as a thin crystalline film, while the target is irradiated with laser light polarized generally in the direction of travel of the particles, whereby the particles upon striking a suitable medium, such as a non-luminescent screen, give off light of the same color as the laser, which becomes visible on the screen. The interaction thus derived can be used in many particular applications such as, for example, in a color television tube and other electronic display or information storage devices.
