Abstract: A universal joint to transmit force from a tool to a workpiece. A driver attachable to the tool has a spherical cavity. A plurality of inwardly facing protrusions are formed in the cavity. Each protrusion has a pair of conical sidewalls separated by an angled ramp. A driven socket has a sphere formed on one end. The sphere has a plurality of channels. The sphere is received in the spherical cavity in the driver and the protrusions in the cavity are received in the channels. The drive webs forming the channel engage the protrusions when the driver is angularly offset from the driven socket.

Abstract: A replaceable tip for a tool. A locking pin is disposed on a transverse opening in the end of the tool. A sleeve having a cammed surface formed interiorly is disposed over the end of the tool with the ends of the locking pin contacting the cammed surface. The replaceable tip has a locking keeper which engages the locking pin. Rotation of the sleeve in opposite directions locks or unlocks the locking keeper to the locking pin to allow retention or removal of the tip. In an alternate embodiment the sleeve has opposite spring fingers which contact the ends of the locking pin.

Abstract: A ratchet wrench has a through cavity in which a reversing lever is disposed. The reversing lever has a pair of protruding lips formed thereon opposite from one another. A cooperating ledge is formed on the head in the cavity and on the pawl which is adjacent to the reversing lever. A spring-loaded pusher is disposed longitudinally in a blind bore in the reversing lever and the pusher engages a pocket in the pawl. A cover plate is disposed on a shelf recessed on the bottom of the wrench and spaced apart from the reversing lever.

Abstract: A method of making a recess in a drive socket and the like includes forming a groove to extend along a face of an elongated drive opening in a metal workpiece from one end of its drive opening, moving material from the surface of the groove to increase its depth from its outer end along only a portion of its length and gathering the material so moved from the groove surface to form a ledge between ends of the groove, whereby a recess is defined by the groove extending beyond the ledge. In addition, a female drive device for socket wrenches and the like is disclosed having an elongated drive opening, a groove longitudinally extending from one end of the drive opening along a face of the drive opening, and a ledge between ends of the groove. The ledge protrudes radially inwardly such that a recess is defined by the groove extending beyond the ledge for retaining a male drive member.
