A mirror-type beam steering apparatus employs at least one flexible mirror support member having, generally, the shape of the Greek letter lambda. Each such member has a pair of flexible leg sections that slant toward one another and are truncated into an interconnecting section. The diverging ends of the leg sections are fixed and an optical beam steering mirror is mounted to the interconnecting section. With this arrangement, a "virtual pivot" occurs at the intersection of the leg section axis (although the legs themselves do not intersect), and torque components applied to deflect the mirror result in rotation of the mirror about the virtual pivot axis. In preferred forms of the invention, the mirror's center of gravity is located on the virtual pivot axis, thereby reducing the inertial resistance to rotation and improving steerer performance.

A camera comprises an information-bearing medium movable to record predetermined information on a filmstrip. The information-bearing medium is a magnetic roller recorder on which is magnetically stored the information, and which is rotationally supported in place for stationary rolling contact with a magnetic track on a filmstrip as the filmstrip is advanced, whereby the information can be repetitively recorded along the magnetic track on the filmstrip. The magnetic roller recorder can be provided apart from the camera as an owner-personalization accessory for the camera.

A monolithic or dual monolithic magnetic device or apparatus having an array of formations such as protruding or raised nubs wherein adjacent nubs have the same or opposite polarity to produce a high magnetic field gradient in the vicinity of the nubs is described. In lieu of nubs, the use of a magnetic device with thru-holes, blind holes, filled holes, or iron flux concentrators is also detailed, wherein all embodiments result in regions of high magnetic field gradient. Apparatus and methods for spot-poling a magnet array are also illustrated.An application of an array of MEMS actuators using the magnets of the present invention to produce high field gradient at precise locations is described. A further application of a biochemical separation unit containing a magnetic array and micro-fluidic channels for separating out magnetic particles tagged with bio-specific molecules for sensing the presence of a disease or specified chemicals is also described.
