The invention provides a light sensitive photographic silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith a magenta coupler having formula I: ##STR1## wherein: R represents a ballasted monosubstituted amino group which enables the coupler to form, upon development with 4-amino-3-methyl-N-ethyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)aniline sulfate developing agent, a magenta dye having a wavelength of maximum absorbance of 545 nm or greater; andX represents hydrogen or a coupling-off group. The resulting dye has an improved spectral absorption curve.

The invention provides a photographic element comprising a support bearing a light-sensitive photographic silver halide layer containing (1) a bicyclic azole coupler (2) an azopyrazolone masking coupler and (3) a low impact development inhibitor releasing (LIDIR) coupler having at least one hydrogen atom at the coupling site and which does not substantially reduce contrast in the layer in which it is coated.
