摘要: The invention comprises a pattern generation unit (20), a programmable lighting means and a holographic screen (28) that together make a holographic volumetric display. The holographic screen contains a pre-recorded set of volume elements or voxels (32) in three dimensional space outside the plane of the holographic screen. The holographic screen comprises a series of sub-holograms where each sub-hologram is associated with a voxel such that the voxel may be reconstructed when the sub-hologram is illuminated. A sub-hologram is a sampled hologram of a voxel and sub-holograms are spatially multiplexed and interleaved across the surface of the holographic screen. The programmable lighting means may be provided by a colour digital projected unit (28) and the pattern generation unit which can illuminate any number of sub-holograms on the holographic screen. In this way, a volumetric display with holographic voxels can be made. The holographic volumetric display can reconstruct three-dimensional moving images in colour.

摘要: An apparatus for a volumetric display includes an imaging system having object and image planes, a source image generation apparatus for forming a source image in the object plane based on received image data, and a control apparatus for supplying image data to the source image generation apparatus. The source image generation apparatus includes a light source. The image data comprises a series of two-dimensional images. The imaging system includes a diffractive optical element and the control apparatus is arranged to generate at least one control signal to vary a wavelength of light emitted by the light source and/or a focal length associated with the diffractive optical element to vary the location of the image plane within a volume of real space in synchronism with the formation of the series of two-dimensional images in the object plane to construct a volumetric three-dimensional image based on the received image data.

摘要: A holographic volumetric display comprises a pattern generation unit (20), a programmable lighting device and a holographic screen (28). The holographic screen contains one or more pre-recorded set(s) of spatially sampled holographic interference patterns (or sub-holograms) each capable of reproducing one or more volume element(s) or voxel(s) (32) in three dimensional space outside the plane of the holographic screen when each sub-hologram is selectively illuminated. A sub-hologram is a sampled hologram of a voxel and sub-holograms in one set are spatially interleaved across the surface of the holographic screen with other sub-holograms. The programmable lighting device may be provided by a color digital projection unit (28) and the pattern generation unit which can illuminate any number of sub-holograms on the holographic screen. In this way, a volumetric display with holographic voxels can be made. The holographic volumetric display can reconstruct three-dimensional moving images in color.
