    摘要: A spark plug having a front end of an insulating member which projects 2 mm or more from a front end face of a metal shell and a volume of the insulating member which lies within a range from a front end of the insulating member to a position lying 1 mm towards a rear end side is 11 mm3 or smaller. When the positions PA, PB, PC and PD are as defined herein, a parallel displacement amount E by which the straight line BC is displaced parallel until it contacts PD is 0.75 mm or larger. In this manner, the occurrence of lateral spark and inside spark can be suppressed effectively.

The spark plug is comprised of a ground electrode having a base end portion fixed to a metal shell, a bend portion integrally formed with the base end portion and being bent and a front end portion integrally formed with the bend portion and forming a spark discharge gap “g” with a center electrode. The ground electrode is comprised of a core extending from the base end portion towards the front end portion through the bend portion; and an outer layer disposed outside the core and extending from the base end portion up to the front end portion through the bend portion. The core is made of Hastelloy C serving as a first metal, and the outer layer is made of Inconel 601 serving as a second metal. Hardness of Hastelloy C is higher than that of Inconel 601.

    摘要: A spark plug includes a ceramic insulator, a center electrode, a metallic shell, and a ground electrode. The center electrode has a shoulder portion at a forward end portion, which tapers forward with respect to the axial direction. A noble metal tip is joined to the forward end portion of the center electrode through a fusion zone. A spark discharge gap is formed between the noble metal tip and the ground electrode. The shortest distance between the fusion zone and a forward end surface of the noble metal tip is 0.8-1.2 mm. The outside diameter of the fusion zone as measured at a forward end of the fusion zone is smaller than that as measured at a rear end of the fusion zone. An acute angle θ1 formed by a straight line L1 and a straight line L2 satisfies the relational expression θ1≦72°.

The spark plug 1 includes a center electrode 5, an insulator 2 and a metal shell 3, and the insulator 2 includes a foot section 13, a tapered section 14 and a middle body section 12. The maximum outer diameter of a portion, which is arranged within the foot section 13, of the center electrode 5 becomes 3.0 mm or less. A step section 21 and a leading end side inner periphery section 51 are formed in the inner periphery of the metal shell 3 and the tapered section 14 is engaged to a step section 21.
