    Abstract: A rotary die cutter includes a frame having spaced side plates. An anvil roll and a die plate roll are rotatably supported in bearing housings which are mounted in vertical slots in the side plates. A roll gap adjustment unit includes a lead screw and a follower member fixedly attached to the anvil bearing housing. The lead screw is threaded into said follower and projects upwardly. A thrust bearing is mounted on the sprocket and the upper bearing housing rests on the thrust bearing. An actuator is mounted to the side frame and a chain and sprocket couples it to the gap sprocket. The actuator includes a gear reduction drive means having a rotating input dial and an output coupled to the actuator sprocket to rotate the chain and sprocket at the rate of substantially one revolution for each one hundred revolutions of the input dial. Cam roller units engage the outer bottom ends of the anvil roll. Spring-loaded preload cam roller units engage the opposite top ends of the die cut roll. Each roller assembly includes a pair of cam rollers mounted in a yoke and engaging the surface of the roll. The preload cam roller units include an adjustment screw threaded through a load plate and bearing on the backside of the yoke. A pair of bolts pass through the load plate and thread into the frame. Springs act between the bolt heads and the plate to load the die roll and thereby both the die and anvil rolls downwardly and thereby eliminate the effect of bearing clearance in the operation of the rolls.

    Abstract: A light control window covering includes a plurality of cells attached one atop the other. Each cell has a substantially opaque top strip at the top of the cell and a substantially opaque bottom strip at the bottom of the cell. Each cell also includes a substantially transparent front sheer member extending vertically at a front of the window covering having an upper end folded inwardly toward a front edge of the top strip and a lower end folded inwardly toward a front edge of the bottom strip, and a substantially transparent rear sheer member extending vertically at a rear of the window covering having an upper end folded inwardly toward a rear edge of the top strip and a lower end folded inwardly toward a rear edge of the second strip. An individual cell is formed by flexibly connecting the end portions of the front and rear sheer members to adjacent ends of the top and bottom strips to form a generally rectangular-shaped loop. The window covering includes an operating element in contact with the plurality of cells for causing relative vertical movement of the front and rear sheer members which, in turn, causes the top and bottom substantially opaque strips to rotate between a first substantially horizontal position which allows light to flow through the sheer members and a second position in which the opaque strips at least partially obstruct the flow of light through the sheer members. In certain embodiments, the ends of the front and rear sheer strips overlap the ends of the opaque strips and the adhesive is provided between the overlapped ends. Also disclosed are preferred methods of making light controlling window coverings.

    Abstract: A Venetian type blind has a bottomrail, a headrail positioned above the bottomrail, a tilting slat, and two sets of slats carried on either upper ladders or lower ladders. The tilting slat has a center segment and an end segment pivotably attached to each end of the center segment by a common axle that runs through the center segment. The first set of slats is carried on a set of upper ladders extending from the headrail to the center segment of the tilting slat. The second set of slats are carried on a set of lower ladders extending from the end segments of the tilting slat to the bottomrail. To change the lower slats to a position different from the upper slats an operator turns an end segment relative to the center segment. Since the end segments are on a common axle they will turn together. A locking tab may be provided on each end segment which will lock the end segments to the center segment. When the end segments are so locked they will turn with the center segment and all of the slats will move together.

    Abstract: A paper web rewind device includes a rewind turret having circumferentially spaced support members with end chucks for rotatably supporting tubular cores on which a web is rewound. Each set of supports is separately rotated and the turret is rotated to locate one core at a rewind station and the second core at an unload/load station. A rider roll at the rewind station is pivotally mounted and moves upwardly onto the core and then outwardly as the roll diameter increases. Just prior to completion of a rewound roll, the turret rotates and moves the rewinding roll while continuing to wind web thereon and also moves a new core to the loading station with rider roll moved to engage the new core. The moving web engages the new core which is rotated at winding speed. A sensor senses the turret position and is operable to decrease the winding speed of the wound roll to create a slack loop between the new core and the wound roll. The high speed rotating new core attracts the slack web onto the new core and the web wraps onto the new core and into the nip between the new core and rider roll. The rotation of the wound roll is stopped and the rotating new roll pulls on the slack loop and creates a sudden snap action force on the web. The snap action force separates the web immediately adjacent the rider roll on a line extending across the web and thereby frees the web for a continuous winding onto the new core.

    Abstract: A web rewind apparatus includes an interior rider roll unit moving with a turret and engaging the winding roll during winding and particularly during indexing to move a new core in place and remove the winding roll. The rider rill is pivotally mounted within the roll support, rotates with the rewinding roll and engages the roll during rewinding or during indexing only. In another form, the rider roll is mounted on the turret by a linear slide and a counterweight member. A coupling connects the rider roll unit and the counterweight member to create an essentially zero gravity force by the rider roll unit. A pistonless cylinder is coupled to the counterweight to apply a constant surface force on the rider roll and thereby on the winding roll. The rider roll is mounted on the slide unit in a suitable bearing unit with the axis of the rider roll parallel to the winding axis. Adjustable bearing units mounted to the slide and permit skewing of the rider roll relative to the winding axis.
