    摘要: In place of earlier known sphericity testing techniques using accurate reference surfaces which are compared with a surface under test, this invention provides an absolute test of sphericity by making use, in effect, of the spherical wavefronts emanting from or converging to a point. A hologram plate is illuminated with coherent light from a laser to establish a first beam which forms a virtual image at the same point as that at which a beam illuminating the surface under test is focused, the illuminating beam being reflected at the surface and forming with the first beam observable interference fringes indicative of departures of the surface under test from true sphericity.

    摘要: Apparatus for avoiding ambiguity in a quantised signal representing a pattern which is scanned by an optical detector. The apparatus operates to scan the pattern to be represented and to produce a quantised signal each quantum of which represents the major colour in each scanning element of the pattern scanned. Sampling means are provided which sample the binary signal produced by the scanning means at a rate higher than the rate at which the signal is ultimately to be quantised and the output from the sampling means controls a gating circuit which operates to prevent the signal representing the pattern from changing from a representation of one colour to a representation of another unless a predetermined number of the samples all represent one colour. This avoids any indeterminacy in the quantised signal at colour junctions where there are two or more colours present in an element being scanned, and no colour is sufficiently predominant for the detectors to unambiguously provide an output representing only that colour.

    摘要: An anti-reflection multiple layer coating is formed on a transparent substrate by successive deposition of an inner layer, at least three intermediate layers and an outer layer, the optical thicknesses of the inner and outer layers being approximately lambda /4 and the overall optical thickness of the coating being approximately lambda , where lambda is a reference wavelength within the band of wavelengths over which reflection is to be reduced. The intermediate layers are formed with progressively decreasing refractive indices from the innermost to the outermost intermediate layers, either as a number of separate layers or as a single layer of graded refractive index.

    摘要: A servo control system comprises an actuator such as an electric motor which is operated in response to a demand signal and to a feedback signal representative of the actual actuator response. The feedback signal is derived by way of respective filters from two component signals representative of the actual response of the actuator and derived respectively from a transducer such as a tachometer generator coupled directly to the actuator and from the actuator itself. The filters are arranged so that the feedback signal contains a greater proportion of the component signal from the actuator within any frequency ranges in which mechanical resonance occurs in the system and a greater proportion of the component signal from the transducer within frequency ranges devoid of such mechanical resonance, so that the component signals substantially compensate each other at resonance and the resulting feedback signal is substantially free of resonance components.
