This invention relates to a combustible sabot and process for its preparan for a spinning tubular projectile. This combustible sabot is prepared in such a way and of such materials that it combusts spontaneously while exiting the gun barrel. The sabot is fabricated from an anhydride cured epoxy binder, boron, molybdenum trioxide, ammonium perchlorate and a metallic fuel selected from either aluminum or magnesium in the presence of a catalyst.

HMX-containing gun propellants having good thermal stability and mechanical properties are made by mixing HMX with a polymerizable binder, a polyacrylate cross-linking agent and a polymerization catalyst and extruding the mixture into hot water to form cured pellets of propellant. The binder comprises a long chain acrylic monomer of 14 to 24 carbon atoms or a blend of such a long chain monomer and a shorter chain monomer having 6 to 13 carbon atoms. The molar ratio of short chain acrylic monomer to long chain monomer may vary from 0:1 to 3:1.

The water and oil resistance of caseless gun propellant compositions of the type which comprise cyclotetramethylenetetramine (HMX) as the high energy component and polyurethane as the binder are improved by preparing the binder by reaction of isocyanates with a hydroxyl-terminated block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide or mixture of the block copolymer with other hydroxyl-terminated polyalkylene oxides. The block copolymer preferably contains from 40% to 60% by weight of ethylene oxide units and comprises at least 15% by weight of the binder.

Composite gun propellants are prepared wherein the burning rate and burningate exponent are controlled by proper choice of particle size. This invention permits the formulation of practical, high impetus, composite gun propellants, tailored specifically to yield the desired ballistic properties for a specific round.
