The machine dispenses a ready-made milk shake. A freezing chamber has a dispensing valve having porting and a valve element so arranged that flow of the semi-frozen comestible and the flavoring material occurs simultaneously. A beater mixes the two during dispensing. A conduit for the flavoring material has a unique coupling to the valve block and a quick-release coupling intermediate its ends. Upon release of the latter, a manually operable sampling valve may be connected to the conduit to selectively draw a sample of the flavoring. A pump is provided for sucking in a liquid comestible and gas in a preselected proportion and delivering them to the bottom of the freezing chamber. A vent is located in the valve block to vent air from the freezing chamber upon start-up of the machine. The vent has an inlet located at a level so that the liquid and gas volumes in the chamber are about equal to the respective proportions pumped.

A method and refrigeration apparatus for producing a sterile slush ice from a sterile liquid for use in surgical procedures. The refrigeration apparatus includes a cabinet having a heat transfer basin at the top and refrigeration mechanism in the cabinet for cooling the heat transfer basin. A separate sterile product basin is positioned in the heat transfer basin and cooled through a heat transfer medium in the product basin. A sterile liquid is deposited in the product basin and ice is scraped off the walls of the product basin with a sterile scraper. A sterile cover including a liquid impervious cover sheet is provided for covering the heat transfer basin and the heat exchange medium therein and the upper portion of the refrigeration apparatus.

A machine for mixing and cooling batches of dry powder ingredients and water comprising, a horizontal mixing cylinder open at one end and having a rotary mixer in the cylinder. Refrigerating mechanism is provided for cooling the walls of the cylinder and for maintaining the mixing cylinder temperature in a range below 45.degree. F. and above 32.degree. F., a door for closing said one end of the cylinder. The mixing cylinder has a dry powder ingredient inlet passage extending through the cylindrical side wall at the top of the cylinder at a location spaced from said one end. The door has a mix dispensing outlet communicating with the lower portion of the cylinder and a dispensing valve for controlling flow through the dispensing outlet and the door has a water inlet communicating with the upper portion of the cylinder and a funnel at the outside of the door extending upwardly to a level above the cylinder. The door is formed of a transparent plastic material and has liquid level graduations thereon correlated with the volume at different levels in the cylinder, and water supply means including a selectively operable water control valve is provided on the machine above the door with a water delivery outlet at a location to deliver water to said funnel on the door when the water control valve is opened.
