摘要:
Apparatus for removing limbs of standing trees to maintain a power line right-of-way free of tree limb interference comprising a self-propelled vehicle having power operated ground stabilizing support leg assemblies, a telescoping boom mounted on said vehicle for horizontal swinging movement about an upright axis and for vertical pivoting movement and a limb cutting assembly on the opposite free end of the boom. The limb cutting assembly includes a mounting structure mounted on the boom for movements about a longitudinal axis with respect to the boom, a power operated cutter having a convex cutting periphery mounted on the mounting structure for movement between a retracted inoperable position and an extended operative position wherein convex cutting periphery extends longitudinally outwardly from the mounting structure and is exposed both longitudinally outwardly and transversely outwardly so as to enable the same to be moved with a transverse swath cutting action by virtue of the movements of the boom, and limb gripping arms carried by the mounting structure for movement from an inoperative position disposed longitudinally inwardly of the cutter so as to permit the swath cutting action thereof and an operative position disposed longitudinally outwardly of the cutter when the latter is in its retracted position so as to grippingly engage a limb or a group of limbs and hold the same in a position to be cut in response to the movement of the cutter from its retracted position into its extended position.

An improvement in a debarking machine of the type including an annular frame, a plurality of debarking tools mounted in annularly spaced relation within the annular frame for rotation together about the axis of the annular frame and for movement toward and away from each other, infeed and outfeed mechanisms for feeding logs through the annular frame so that the tools will engage the exterior periphery of the successive logs and strip the bark therefrom during their movement through the annular frame. The infeed mechanism includes three driven infeed spiked rolls arranged so that their spiked peripheries normally engage the exterior periphery of the log in centered relation and move the same axially through the annular frame for debarking by the tools. The improvement of the invention resides in providing each infeed roll with helical blades at the ends thereof for rotation therewith configured with respect to the direction of rotational movement of the associated roll to move a log engaged thereby in a lateral direction toward the spiked periphery of the roll.

The infeed and outfeed mechanisms each include three driven spiked rolls arranged so that their spiked peripheries normally engage the exterior periphery of the log in centered relation and move the same axially through the annular frame for debarking by the tools. Each of the spiked rolls includes a cylinder and a multiplicity of spikes extending radially outward therefrom. The improvement comprises constructing each of the spikes in at least one of the rolls and preferably all so as to provide a radially outward cutting edge disposed generally within a plane parallel with the plane of the cylinder. Each cutting edge is configured to define at least one line extending transverse to the direction of movement thereof on the roll and a second line extending transverse to the first line. Each spike divergingly tapers from the lines in a direction toward the exterior of said cylinder.

Each of the spiked rolls includes a cylinder and a multiplicity of spikes extending radially outwardly therefrom. The improvement comprises providing at least one of the infeed rolls with an elongated member (preferably three) secured to and extending substantially transversely across the exterior periphery of the cylinder thereof and defining a substantially continuous log penetrating surface disposed generally in the plane of the outer ends of said spikes. The log penetrating surface of each elongated member is configured to penetrate a log engaged thereby to an extent less than the penetration of the log by the spikes of the associated roll so that another roll cooperatively engaging the log serves to effect a transverse centering movement of the log along the elongated member while engaged thereby.
