摘要: A split-resistant wooden rail-road tie is provided with a plurality of horizontally spaced vertical holes throughout the length of the tie to inhibit expansion or propagation of splits that are developed during use and to enable the ties to be more efficiently impregnated with preservatives. Wooden ties are generally cut in rectangular blocks, with the grain generally extending in the longitudinal direction thereof. Each tie is treated by first drilling holes throughout the entire length of the ties and then treated with preservatives. The holes not only prevent further propagation of splits, they provide additional surfaces for breathing during drying and for absorbing preservatives during chemical treatment. The holes provide stress relief which equalize the internal pressures developed within the body of the tie, preventing any split from propagating.
